I discovered this morning that there was a charge to my card of $145 on 14th Feb from Paypal, I no longer have a Paypal account and have cancelled it, I am with ASB and they confirmed this is going around.

I guess someone wanted to buy them selves a valentines gift...

So not the bank account but the credit card.

You say the babk cancelled but was this the transaction or credit card - because it sounds to mecyour number has been compromised and it is out being used.

As I said make sure your bank has cancelled not only the transaction but also your credit card.

As above "this is going around" is not an answer. If your bank said this, call the credit card security line.

Your credit card number is probably in a list - crooks get those from hacked retail store (hotels and restaurants are the most common sources) or a compromised website.

People should regularly check their bank and credit card statements as a general habit anyway for this reason.

I do not have a PayPal account anymore it was canceled/deleted, I can not log into it or recover my password.

ASB have canceled my debt card and have also put in a application for a refund.

I only have a debt card not a credit card.

ASB informed me that there was an I flux of calls about the same thing hence the suggestion to check your bank transactions as a precaution.

A debit card and credit card are effectively the same thing when processed - the difference is one gets money out of an account the other from a credit line. Both have numbers that look like credit card and are effectively the same when used on websites and retail.

Just got off the phone with ASB again and turns out it was just me and isn't a active issue going around, so very different to what I was told this morning, so apologies for the false alarm., irritatingly they say it can take up to 30 days to recover the money and that's if they can.

The credit card is secure in two ways: it doesn't draw funds directly from your bank account and you have the security of chargebacks. Banks don't give you that.

You have to pay the amount in full otherwise you will pay interest. Some cards give you air points or cashback - it is worth checking those out. Most cards will have an annual fee though.

How to prevent this? Make sure you don't supply your card to unknown online retailers - dodgy streaming sites that promise movies and sports content without having licence for this is a sure way for having the number leaked. Donating to fake charities sites. Falling for phishing emails and so on - you have to be constantly alert on how you share your information and financial data.

At the end it's up to you.

Ok thank you I will apply for a "VISA Light" card from ASB that says has no fees, for the sole purpose of using it instead of my debit card for online transactions.

I do try to be careful online but I guess I wasn't careful enough.

Don't ASB issue EFTPOS cards anymore? You can use the EFTPOS in retail and use a credit card online (or hotels where it's needed).
