A friend lost a lot of money from a bank account as below.
Cards have been cancelled, passwords changed and the bank is on to it.

Does anyone have any ideas on how this would have happened or has happened to them?
It suddenly appeared on a statement after occurring for weeks it seems

Someone has their credit card number and is buying a heap of Mobile topups - are they with One NZ for Prepay Mobile by any chance?

That could be data overage charges. What does your One account statement say?

He does have a One account, but unlimited data. I assume its just named that way to not look so suspicious. Although many transactions does the opposite.....

The first thing to establish is whether those charges are for the users One account (vs some other unknown One account).  If so, check with One to find out why. If not, cancel CC immediately and query the transactions with the card issuer immediately.  Usually the card issuer will reverse the transactions pending investigation and all should become clear from that investigation.

Don't forget that the Banking Ombudsman is available if a satisfactory explanation is not forthcoming.

Ah, that's interesting. I spotted an identical charge on my wife's card a month or two back - except it was a single $100 debit instead of multiple $20 ones. We don't use Vodafone/One for any service. Fortunately I saw it the same day it happened. We immediately cancelled the card and the bank refunded us promptly. We never heard anything further and still have absolutely no idea how it happened. My wife had bought some stuff for the first time from a small online store a few days before so the timing meant she was suspicious of that, but it could have been leaked months earlier.
