I just got this email from Debut. Sounds like they are closing down as debit cards is what they did?

----------------------------------------------

We started Debut to improve how banking works in New Zealand, and that continues to guide how we operate.

Over time, we’ve built and launched our debit card product, including features such as instant account setup and card activation, virtual cards, and built-in advanced security controls — several of which were first to market in New Zealand and are still not widely offered by mainstream banks.

As we reassess the market and where we can add the most value, we’ve decided to move away from the debit card product. This allows us to focus on the next phase of Debut.

As part of this change, debit card and related services will stop and the platform will move into a quieter development phase.

Your funds remain secure and accessible as outlined below.

Important information and key dates

Debit card services ending 31 March 2026:

Debut debit cards — including physical cards and those added to Apple Pay or Google Pay — will stop working from 31 March 2026. After this date, card payments and related features will no longer be available.

Access to your balance in the app:

The Debut app will remain available until 15 April 2026 (excluding card functionality). During this time, you will be able to:

- View your account balance
- Request withdrawal of any remaining funds

After 15 April 2026:

If any balance remains after this date, please contact us at contact@makingdebutbank.co.nz, and we will assist with returning your funds.

Your funds will continue to be handled in accordance with Debut’s Terms and Conditions.

Thank you for your support and for being part of Debut.

"he platform will move into a quieter development phase."

Not what I would call a positive commitment to the future... s

Sunds like the end of the startup runway is approaching and either can't find more funds or they aren't positive cash flow ...

They also have 2024 copyright on their website, given they are not a proper bank, not sure I'd be keeping much funds there.

I'd think end of the runway...

They aren't the only ones who are trying this app-only thing as part of an appeal to gen-Z seemingly without realising the money is made with demographics who don't want to be forced to access their funds on only a cellphone.

There were too many of these apps cashing in on the banking industries general uselessness at doing anything that is not a homeloan.

A few were bound to fail. Hopefully banks see the demand for less crap debit card services and stop trotting out half measures like changing CSCs and similar.
