I've just downloaded yet another iphone newspaper app "pressreader". Like most others, free on itunes.




How do news papers make any money, when there are apps like this or even aggregaters like google news.
I've got todays entire Saturday herald sitting on my iphone now. I've also got USA today - and Washington Post. Any number of over 1000 papers worldwide


It looks like its one big protected doc (pdf like) that you can zoom into and read . Its word for word an exact copy of todays herald.


How is this good business sense to just give away papers.
Are the papers just making money from advertising, are they trying to set up an online readership then start a paid subscription down the line.


Don't get me wrong I love it _ not as enjoyable as the real thing. But very cool to have all 100 odd pages of several papers from today on your phone.

The first question is "does the NZ Herald know its content is being redistributed by a third party?"

Perhaps they don't know. Is Pressreader a legitimate publisher distribution tool, or are they just ripping the content without authorisation?

Hmmm. It seems the NZ Herald licenses its content to the company behind this application (PressDisplay.com) so it gets paid anyway.

freitasm - OK - so the app developers (PressDisplay.com) are paying the papers - likely on a per paper download maybe.

I've just tried to download a few more copies of different papers. Its changed its tune now. Its asking "would you like to purchase this issue"
So this may be one of the new "in-app purchases" apple is allowing app developers now.

I'll follow the purchase through...

There it is - $1.29 for Australian Daily Telegraph.

So - the first few are free then they charge. OK I know whats happening , I feel better now - the world is in order again.

And still doesn't explain the nz herald website (and others) with a large proportion of its news on it for free.
eg the World cup All Whites article is word for word the same on www.nzherald.co.nz as todays paper!

On their website they have advertising.  Of course this does not equate to massive revenue!  Fairfax has recently said they are assessing whether to make some of their online content subscription based!

I think you will find out it's some massive revenue, when it comes to the sizes of APN and Fairfax...

I doubt it. I know a lot of people who said they would pay to access Geekzone without ads, and when we point out they can subscribe their good intentions seem to disappear... The same seems to apply to online newspapers - and those don't even offer options for no ads.
