I just swtiched to Firefox again...and installed a lot of recommended plugins from a friend, to greater protect myself. Domain Details and FlagFox.

I was thinking of moving to kiwibank, but noticed from one of my plugins that kiwibank.co.nz is hosted in Japan. Yet when I do a whois, it says it is in New Zealand. So I am slightly confused.

Plugin is wrong for sure.

From memory the kiwibank URL for internet banking is www.ib.kiwibank.co.nz
This has IP 202.12.250.180 (although of course could be load balanced to others also).
We can't trace to the IP totally, but we get as far as
8  ge2-po1.cat01-wlg-core.iconz.net (210.48.5.109)  38.225 ms  38.072 ms  38.321 ms
9  210.48.49.113 (210.48.49.113)  41.890 ms  41.993 ms  42.102 ms
which suggests to me it's in Wellington.

And the IP block, is NZ Posts,

inetnum:      202.12.248.0 - 202.12.255.255
netname:      NZPOSTNZ
descr:        New Zealand Post,
descr:        Internal, Postal and Banking Network
country:      NZ
admin-c:      AS146-AP
tech-c:       DB35-AP
mnt-by:       APNIC-HM
mnt-routes:   MAINT-NZ-NZPOST
status:       ASSIGNED PORTABLE

I am not sure you need more "protection" than having a good antivirus and antispyware - even more if you get wrong information from this "protection".

I see kiwibank.co.nz is hosted on 202.12.249.21 which seems to belong to New Zealand post, and using an IP assigned to that company, in New Zealand.

From a trace I think one of the hops is 210.48.49.113, which belongs to ICONZ - it seems kiwibank.co.nz is hosted/colocated on the same datacentre as Geekzone.

My suggestion? Get rid of those Firefox plugins. Some of them only slowdown things.

Thanks for the replies guys. I knew by the IP range it was New Zealand, but just found it odd. Every other site I visit seems to be accurate, except that one.

We just got a bit overprotective of our systems lately as my hubby got his wow account hacked - on his machine, which then died. And we got him a fancy new Quadcore - and just wanted to be a little more cautious ( I have told him to be careful on porn sites lol). So I asked a friend who is a little more IT savvy than me what he recommends/uses.

And we both do have good virus protection and spyware protection. Just having a scare like that with WoW made us paranoid.

I use Microsoft Security Essentials as my antivirus and antispyware. Another free options is Avast.

Common sense is "don't install things, don't open files 'friends' send to you - those funny powerpoint are not funny after all".

For example if you visit a porn site and it says "Install the plugin to watch this video" then DON'T. You shouldn't need anything more than you already have on your PC to watch a video. No codecs needed if using the latest Windows 7, and if you need anything download from the source, not from any other site.

Other than this, have fun.

Well, there is always the possibility you are being hijacked.

I'd do a traceroute from your machine for a start. Check you are not using a proxy server in your F/Fox config.

Ensure your virus and spyware checkers are running and up to date, do a full scan.

Banking will be over SSL anyway, so any discrepancy should throw up a warning for you.

Well his old machine is dead, so we can't check it for the culprit.

My machine, I don't downloand anything really, apart from stuff I know is safe. And I never have time to open up friends funny movies they send me - I just hit delete lol

His new machine which is 2 weeks old is completely clean - all he has done, well I've done, is installed Nortons Internet Security, Avast, Malwarebytes and Spybot Search and destroy. Copied over WoW and that is all he has had time for. My machine has the above - plus microsoft security essentials - which is turned off, but I use it to run a thrid scan once in a while.

I don't think we have been hijacked - as the above software would have noticed. Plus my wow account was untouched. We also use hijackthis and it reported nothing out of the usual. But his laptop could have been. I think it died as a result of something malicious.

You shouldn't run two or more antivirus on the same PC as this WILL cause problems.

Bizzare, my reply didn't reply.

Oh I completely know not to have more than one antivirus running at the same time. MSE only runs when I want to do an additional scan. Removed from Startup. But AVAST, won't allow me to do this, so I have turned off the Real Time Sheilds. And only use it to do additional scans. So all it does is downloads its updates and says I am not protected, Click here to Fix. Which will turn everything on.

Nortons Internet Security is the only one that is running properly.

You shouldn't even have those installed as antivirus software uses special hooks into the system and will still cause problems. You should have only one installed.
