I'm pretty sure I've used their callback option last time I had a similarly long wait time, though I think you're not allowed to use mobile numbers which is really inconvenient.

I also love the way the voice recognition only gives you three attempts at something before it hangs up on you. I always make the mistake of muttering under my breath and triggering a response.

At least you got a wait time. I tried several times last week to call from a landline and all I got was a message saying "due to overloading we cannot take your call, try again later" followed by the phone hanging up. Quick to jump on you when they want something, slow to respond when you want something...

I was just going to say, you are lucky you didn't get the "overloading" issue. Kingjj stole my thunder!

If your MP is from National complain to them. After all they are the ones who cut the staffing levels.

My wife rang Sunday morning @ 9 am (when they open). She also had to wait 40 minutes to get a reply.
We both had a few hundred to pay in tax, which is weird since we are both full time salary and PAYE should do it all automatically.
Maybe they made a big stuff up and everyone is calling in?

I have tried the callback system and had a callback when they said. The callback system automated voice asks you to enter 1 if you are "your name". When I do this it says "Invalid Option" and retries this 3 times before giving up. Have tried several times with the same result - I am using Woosh.

So, it's back to waiting 45 minutes on the phone line.

I had the same issues being dumped by the call system due to overloading week before last. I figured it was due the belief it is easier to give money to the IRD than get it back ;P

My tactics: I looked up the full contact list on the site and started calling each number 1 by 1. Finally got through on some business line.

All the CSR's are meant to be trained the same so should be able to help no matter where you get to.

Hope that helps.

I tried to get through yesterday afternoon about 20 times, over the time period from 3.30pm to 7.30pm, each time I got the overloaded message. About 7.50, ten minutes before closing i got through and sat on the hold musice for 5 minutes before someone answered and my problem was "fixed in less than a minute.
