Hi all. I'm thinking of buying some shares. Don't ask me why. it's part of my plan to take over the world or something.

I know what I'm wanting to do, but Just wondering if anyone knows of any "green" companies on the nzx.

I Have googled, and looked around the interweb a bit, but don't want to invest in companies like meridian or genesis and et al that claim to be green. Im more after innovation and ethical / sustainable investment.

I don't expect you to give me tips on WHO to invest in (I am more than capable of doing my own research once I have names), I just want to know some companies that may have some of the following traits or have innovative solutions on some of the following environmental problems.

Environmental Problem
Solution

Global warming
Renewable energy and low carbon fuels

Native forest destruction
Plantation timber

Waste and landfill availability
Recycling

Habitat damage
Eco tourism, environmental engineering, site rehabilitation

Declining wild fish stocks
Aquaculture and mariculture

Chemicals in food/ ecosystem
Organic agriculture

Vehicle pollution
Improved technology, public transport, rail, electric vehicles, bicycles and others

I am also especially interested in companies that may be developing wave technology and enterprise groups. If you want to promote your own company, fine, just give me a good reason why :)

Any ideas appreciated.

try sandfords (fishing industry) or maanaaki (forestry)
also westpac are 'green'
restuarant brands are moving towards triple bottom line reporting.

just dont choose allied farmers.

I suspect you might struggle to invest in Meridian, being an SOE - you already have a stake in it as a tax payer.

In this current age of "greening", I guess you'll find most companies going for some kind of niche angle.

Infratil might been seen as a possible investment case as it owns NZ bus and runs the majority of buses in Auckland and Wellington. But they own or part own Wellington Airport and Greenstone Energy (ex Shell) on the flip side.

Some of the more innovative companies IMO who are doing some neat stuff are not NZX listed, so would be a struggle to invest in, from at a share point of view.

Have you considered Prometheus at all for alternative investment?

Yeah I know. That's the opinion I came up with whilst Googling. It's a shame, I just thought that maybe some of their parent companies/backers might have been an option for investment if I knew who they were.

Thanks for that one, looking into it, but TBH would prefer to make / take my own risks in the sharemarket - that all part of the plan (and the fun).

Sanford look good from a share point of view, but in 10 years we will have overfished our seas and then what will they do? Will look more into their views on sustainability though.

Not investing in Westpac. Aussie banks have enough of my money as it is. (but I know I can't do too much about that.

And yeah Allied Farmers: Goes without saying really..
