Ok so I went online and booked Sudima Hotel in Chch airport. Yay entered all my CC details via secure website .... got email saying reservation confirmed.

48 hrs later "sudima" manager emails saying CC was declined. No way it's got a 10x larger credit limit and not even in credit as it stands.

Asks me to provide "alternative method of payment"

So you mean Sudima random employee processes my number after all the hard work entering the secure website?

PS - actually i think there is a problem with the secure site as I tried 3 times over 3 days to get a successful process ... hmm might let them know :) hee hee

Any thoughts?

It sounds like the hotel processes them manually. Ring them back, confirm they have your correct CC details and ask them to process again.

If it fails then call your bank and ask why. The bank can see every attempt that has been made and why it failed.

Your card wouldn't happen to be a mastercard would it?

I would not really consider that a safety/security issue. No different to any business that uses your credit card. What I was expecting is something like what we had happen when booking a driver service in London. Secure web site booking. However in the confirmation email that was sent back they included our full credit card details!! Number, expiry date and even security code! Was NOT impressed. Sent them a email but never go a response so do not know if they fixed it.
