Just that. Would you be one of the first to use it once it's avilable in NZ? I heard Vodafone was trying this out. Sounds like a huge jump from those simple Snapper cards that you can use on buses and things - this would be completely different, where suddenly your phone is like a credit card!
NFC has already been in use here for a year for payments using Mastercard's PayPass technology.
Or are you meaning when mobile NFC payments using Paypass/Paywave app's become reality? This is what Vodafone/BNZ are trialling now, and is already available in other countries so the technology is already proven, it's really just a matter of handsets, vendors and telco's agreeing on simple things such as what should act as the secure element- the SIM or the handset.
Yeah that is exactly what I meant by NFC tech, the mobile handsets being your payment method... Yes you're right, it's quite abundant in Japan I heard, so it's the way of the future in NZ... but i gues what I'm saying is how safe is it long term, I mean a credit card is one thing, it's only got one function, but a smartphone is something entirely different, you could connect it to it in various ways, so would it be safe? And if the point of security, as you say would be the Sim or the Handset, then what if one or another is lost/stolen
I think from a consumer point of view safety is secondary, I wouldn't touch the thing if I was liable if I got hacked. That's the credit card company's problem.
When Snapper started there was a push to get it into retailers as 'the new way to pay'.
Now, I know two retailers, one a chain the other a Mom and Pop, that used to have the machines but now don't. Now, it is almost all, if not entirely, for buses. Snapper cards make a lot of sense for bus travel.
I can imagine a retailer saying "OK, so I have to buy a new terminal and train my staff to use it... and I get?"
To me it all seems a bit like the car windscreen wipers that sense the rain so you don't have to switch them on. Amazing tech looking for a problem to solve.
My new Visa card has some kind of contactless payment technology. That would help a lot to reduce the wear on my credit card, which by the time it gets near its expiry date is just about stuffed. It also saves time at the checkout, which would be another big advantage.
