Oh Darn

http://www.stuff.co.nz/business/small-business/7911796/Lion-buys-Emersons-craft-brewery

They couldn't brew a good beer of their own - so Lion bought the best brewery in the country

Here's hoping it works out better than Macs

They always say that,

but after a few years the accountants keep asking why are we only making such small quantities of this brand, if we moved production to our main brewery we could brew it cheaper, keep the price the same and make more money.....

Happened with Monteiths and Macs, it will happen here, it might take 5-10 years but it will happen

Trust a corporate to allow a small independent to retain it's individual character? You may be more trusting than I am.

I live in Wellington so finding craft beer isn't really a problem, the craft beer section of New World Metro has to be seen to be believed and craft beer bars are everywhere.

Didn't anybody tell you I was a hacker?

Yeah there is that. The demise of Macs spawned Stoke, Monteiths priced itself off the market. As Cracked says, there are so many good beers around it doesnt matter

I would rate New World Thorndon over Metro for the selection, it's massive! Over 500 I think, not including the standard mainstream beers

Good call, I just happen to work across the road from Metro.

Stoke, oh god now, its the only beer I have given away because it was so bad. I have started brewing my own, brewed a nice Mexican Cerveza the other week came out nicely at 5.75% Otherwise being from the south island I drink Speights.

But back to the OP I agree its a shame that these bigger companies are having to buy smaller craft brewers out because they can't make there own beer good.

I don't think it is anything to do with that. It is all about the brand, and the fact that the current market and fashion is the boutique beers, where the beer makers can charge a premium on them. Small companies often startup, in the hope they will be able to sell to a larger business and make a profit, so it is win win for them.

I dont believe this was the case with Emerson's.

They have been brewing for twenty years now

I believe they have rebuffed take-over offers in the past

I think it was all about making really good beer  ( note the "was" )

Most companies at some stage need to be sold, and all businesses should have exit strategies. Boutique beers are in fashion at the moment so this is probably the best time to sell, while still continuing on to make it like they used to.

kiwitrc: Swift reaction http://www.stuff.co.nz/business/industries/7912750/Bars-drop-Emersons-after-sale-to-Lion

Both those joints have a fair amount of "hipster-cred" ,so this was not unexpected,

Also I would guess that any of the mainstream bars that are in the DB camp will also stop stocking  Emersons.

Since you are in wellington, try Hashigo Zake if you haven't already. They have a great range of uber-hoppy proper beers. Also, Little Beer Quarter is worth a visit.
