Linux:

@boosacnoodle You think it is a rort when they need to pay staff to manage systems / pay power bills / rent / and have hardware in a data centre etc and do planned work like required changes

Shame on you!

You’ve missed the point here entirely: the LFC is still receiving the monthly fee for services (power bills, etc., will all get paid).

But, a swap of LFC is a completely different thing altogether from the days of a technician needing to physically stroll up to the exchange or cabinet and swap someone’s physical copper connection over to another port (UCLL), yet this is how it is charged - despite that, as far as I am aware, there isn’t a single LFC actually offering that (wholesale) service today.

What is actually happening is more-or-less just changing the billing records in a system somewhere from A to B. The cost should be trending towards $0 - not going upwards from $25. The cost is indefensible, frankly.

I know Chorus is mostly automated, but some LFCs reportedly still use a fairly manual process for bringing up connections/etc. Additionally, during connection/reconnect is when things are most likely to go wrong (churn not so much), things like missing ONT/Power Supply, damaged cables, and so on. Seems sensible for me for fees to cover provisioning costs be lumped together and paid by those at time of incurrance, rather than used as a reason to raise the base plan fees even more and paid by everyone all the time.

It looks disproportionate because the bigger ISPs package it up (and effectively hide it) with 12 month contracts, early termination and/or notice fees, whereas those like Quic are charging it directly. I do prefer the upfront model.

The automation is also making network Changes, from RSP VLAN X to RSP VLAN Y, also the Point of presence from one RSP to another may not be the same as the point of presence in the same exchange so tail extensions may need to be added/removed.

Yes these changes are automated but the systems need to be maintained, and when it goes pear shaped someone has to intervene and fix it.

as I said, the charges to RSPs to make these changes in my opinion are more than fair

Chorus have a bunch of fees for stuff and generally there isn't the margin in providing internet access to want to absorb these.

Speaking for myself someone who is going to nickel and dime the ISP I work for will quickly end up on my "not priority" list and they are welcome to deal with a mass market ISP helpdesk.

Whereas, everyone else who has a business to run and gives me respect invariably ends up getting free NOC level help worth well in excess of the small amounts someone else quibbled about.
