Hi,

I am a current customer at quic, and am about to move houses. Am I getting this right that I not only have to pay up front for a new connection but also a new sign up fee? And we can't even use a referral code to waive this as an existing customer?

So I am better off to cancel my connection and sign up as a completely new customer to waive the sign up fee if I want to go to this effort to keep them as an ISP?

I assume I have got something wrong here, seem very hostile to existing customers.

Have you read the FAQ? [https://www.quic.nz/support/]

Simply order a new service at your new property from our home page, entering the date you wish to be connected during the order process.

For your existing connection/old property, simply login to your account, click into your connection and click “Cancel” when ready – in the notes, simply enter that you’re moving houses and your new connection is already ordered and our team will link up your billing so you’re not penalised at all!

Yes I read that, however it does not say anything about waiving the sign up fee, which i can do with a new connection. Also you have to pay up front for the new connection, does this mean it will be credited.. it doesn't make this clear.

It costs Quic money to have that new connection provisioned irrespective of whether you're a new customer or not, so you're not being penalised they are simply passing the cost onto you from the LFC

I understand that, however as a new customer I can easily find a referral code online and waive this, like your email signature.

You've got your answer, though its not the outcome you're after. What you do is up to you.

Yer a shame, but I guess it's more profitable to get new customers than retain existing ones. Might sign up again in a years time.

Why not just signup as a new customer, even with another ISP? We're in a cost of living crisis and so many people are looking to save money where they can and every little bit helps

Yup thats exactly what I am doing, I wonder what would happen if one of these companies actually actively tired to retain customers? Guess its just not worth it for them.

So all the hassle and effort of a provider change to save a 1 off $29 for a service you are presumably happy with?

I don't trust them to not double charge me for a new account (happened in the past), it takes less then 3 mins to sign up to a new provider who give out discounts to ... new customers.

Quic has had massive growth, far outstripping initial expectations, pretty entirely by much by word of mouth. Other ISP's need to do things like pay for your chorus connection fee out of their marketing budget to get customers.. I know which ISP i'll be staying with.

I'm a geek, a gamer, a dad, a Quic user, and an IT Professional. I have a full rack home lab, size 15 feet, an epic beard and Asperger's. I'm a bit of a Cypherpunk, who believes information wants to be free and the Net interprets censorship as damage and routes around it. If you use my Quic signup you can also use the code R570394EKGIZ8 for free setup. Opinions are my own and not the views of my employer.

In most cases, the connection fee is outside of Quic’s control, as it is charged by the Local Fibre Company (LFC). Whether the LFC is Chorus, TFF, Enable, or Northpower, they apply a tail connection fee for all new connections. This fee is passed on to the ISP, regardless of whether the service is a new install, a move, or a relocation.

Which is an absolute rort, let's be clear, as in the vast majority of cases this process is completely automated and realistically incurs little to no costs to LFC - certainly not the $25 or so that Enable charges. It does serve as a deterrent for some customers moving providers. It's a junk fee and should realistically be banned by the ComCom.

No it is not, I am defending the LFCs here, that automation took many hours to build, and the LFCs have to recoup their ROI, it also needs to be maintained.

$20-30 every time the LFC needs to make a change to their network to accommodate a change is more than fair....

@boosacnoodle You think it is a rort when they need to pay staff to manage systems / pay power bills / rent / and have hardware in a data centre etc and do planned work like required changes

Shame on you!
