Howdy folks

Looking to switch from my current (and long term ISP - Snap / 2Degrees) but as I game using Geforce Now I wanted to check if anyone was using it and if so what general latency was being got?  Currently I get around 25ms to CloudGGs servers in Syndey (they host Geforce Now in Aus/NZ) via a wired ethernet connection and as cloud gaming is latency/packet sensitive I wanted to see if anyone else on Quic was using this service and what the experience was like.

Any comments?

Thanks,

Chris

Yeah you'll get similar on Quic. I assume you're based in Auckland. Quic have their own transit over to Australia so should be a pretty similar experience.

I'm seeing 37ms from Wellington so take away around 12ms (the latency for me to the Auckland BNG) and you get around 25ms. If you've got a location I can ping then I am happy to run additional tests. But I am also seeing 37ms over to the Quic Australia handover so assume based from what I was seeing the Geforce Now servers must be literally in the same datacentre.

But while I don't have a Geforce Now subscription I did try the Trial on my connection and it worked totally fine from my MacBook, playing over WiFi to Sydney East with an average latency of 37ms. I was actually rather impressed with how well it worked.

Edit: I did just test from an Auckland Quic connection and am seeing 25ms from that connection to an IP address of one of their servers in Sydney East.

Thank you very much!  I am 'reliant' on this service as its an awesome way to have a decent PC to play games on without needing to outlay huge cash so its great to see your results.  I can start to progress my switch over!

Cheers

Good luck @Benoire, I've just recently switched from Quic to 2D due to performance issues (Not with Geforce Now in particular as don't use that).  Issues are all gone since making the switch a couple of weeks ago.

No other changes other than the ISP so it wasn't anything to do with my internal network or hardware.

Just also remember no ISP is perfect and I've seen lots of routing issues on 2degrees also seen on your Smokeping. The problems you were complaining about also got worse with 2degrees as shown by your own monitoring. There has also been lots of movement with Quic since you left especially around transit to the South. You're also down South, the OP is in Auckland and there is more to the story than you're letting on: https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=194&topicid=315869&page_no=2#3275644

Just also a small reminder considering who you work for to just be careful with your comments especially in a public space.

FYI Smokeping showing improved performance across the board now other than increased latency to Cloudflare, which is now going to Auckland.  Packet loss has improved a lot.

Here's just one example showing the difference from the ISP switch on the 26th August.

I agree, packet loss has improved a whole lot on Quic too from your area:

This individual is also based in Dunedin testing the Wellington PoP (as a test) which also is now live: https://www.quic.nz/our-wellington-pop-is-here/ but there has, again, been lots of changes since you left improving the network for everyone.

But again, lots more to the story then you're letting on. Considering there is a potential conflict of interest type situation with who you work for lets leave it here ok?

Can confirm - I get 26ms to Sydney on Quic, AKL based here, transit appears solid

That's great that things are improving for Quic!
And as I said in my thread you linked to, I may move back to Quic again in the future if they can keep improving. 👍
My parents have a Quic connection at their 2nd property up north and they haven't had any complaints but then they only really use it for web browsing on the weekends. :)

AKL based Quic customer here -- if you like I can add a server or two to my smokeping for you to have a look at.

I wouldn't expect any major improvements though. I was previously with Vocus (Slingshot) for seven years and not had any issues at all -- can only remember one outage in all that time. My husband is a gamer and was happy with the performance -- anything bad was usually something local to us (or the other side) rather than Vocus itself.

Switched to Quic due to moving into our own place and decided to make the jump to get a static IP. Was a bit iffy at first (which both me and husband was a bit annoyed about) but turned out to be an issue with my EdgeRouter config -- once I sorted that out been smooth sailing ever since.

From a purely network performance view, I don't see any difference between sticking with 2deg as they do have a good network or making the jump to Quic who are also good. However Quic has a nice Discord community though and $49 static IP is another nice thing! :)
