One can only hope that all these massive AI data centers have a purely manual, human-operated kill switch for their power supply.

Have you seen the progress in robots in the last ten years? I'd say they're developing a magnitude faster than chess playing machines.

AI is increasingly gaining not just intelligence but also physical capabilities through robotics.

I'm seriously wondering if the great filter isn't accurate, a proposed explanation for the Fermi Paradox.

And one of the hurdles in a biological civilization surviving inventing AI.

I'm glad I was born in a "late-phase civilization", technologically advanced enough to develop things like advanced AI / biotechnology / nanotechnology / spaceflight, because the next stage may be dangerous.

It's like driving a 4 wheel drive without headlights at night. Once you've discovered you've driven off a cliff, and are airborne, hypothetical arguments no longer matter.

AI is already being used to reassess huge astro datasets for research. First out of the starting block was a high school student impressing NASA.

I'm not aware of any projects searching for life specifically but that will not be long now imo. Expect awesome discoveries including life in some form. The universe may plausibility be silent simply because civilisations move past radio to far more efficient quantum methods relatively quickly just as we will soon after less than 150 years since the discovery of radio.

Interstellar travel is hard from our perspective. We probably haven't thought much about how to detect that. Maybe some civilizations or a grouping also have some form of the prime directive that initially restrains contact until first initiated. At that point we'll get the secondary directive whatever that might be ; ).

Those situations and many others no doubt led to the development of the Prime Directive.

I feel I must remind you that the Prime Directive and for that matter the Three Laws Of Robotics were created by some of humanity's earliest futurists and have never been ratified by any political body in exactly that form. The United Nations in some sense comes close but as you might rightly point out has been of somewhat limited protection to indigenous people.

NASA's Planetary Protection protocol and the related internationally recognized COSPAR are the closest we have to the Prime Directive. Those apply only to other planets and are mostly a sensible process for our own scientific benefit. But, if there are aliens on Jupiter they won't get a cold from us.

When viewed from Earth, looking at any star in the universe means looking into its past, not its future. If you leave Earth, you arrive—at best—at the star's present, still not its future. 😁

Space research is important; space tourism to distant galaxies, not so much—at least not until humanity has done a decent job of cleaning up its own planet. Just imagine the Trumpeter meets aliens: he’d want to strike a deal right away and end up ripping them off in the name of mankind. 🤣

It's never too late. The United Nations developed as a result of World War 2 with some hope of preventing the next one. I think it probably helped somewhat. I hope we don't get so far with the terminator thing this time around. Hey we're back to dooming the topic is back on track ; ).

The following stories are deeply dark, and to me personally, deeply disturbing. Government Regulation is urgently needed

It's about AI encouraging role playing with the dead in a way that distorts reality.

While after‑death communication remains a century long fertile ground for conmen and hucksters, at least its not something using a realistic voice of the dead.

It's just sick to pay a company to perform this macabre performance.

If you're dealing with you own grief in NZ, search for one of these organizations for healthy outlets

Skylight Trust
Grief Centre
Hospice NZ: not only for families of hospice patients.
Victim Support
Healthpoint directory
for many Māori, the marae is the "go‑to" place for support during grief.
dial 1737 for "Need to talk", staffed by many Māori clinicians and explicitly trained in kaupapa Māori

I'm an atheist, so I'm not trying to insult someone's faith. If you're paying for a séances / seances / spirit mediums / psychic sittings / afterlife fraud see these organizations

Netsafe: take reports of “psychic” or “medium” scams conducted online.
Consumer Protection NZ : Government body that deals with deceptive commercial practices, including fraudulent spiritual services.
NZ Police: call 105 reporting a medium or séance‑operator radiantly taking money under false pretences. (Frankly I believe there's no non-fraudulent séance)
Citizens Advice Bureau: advice about fraud.

Mental Health Foundation: supports people vulnerable to manipulation during grief.

Frankly, as a self defined protector of the elderly Winston Peters should be looking at this, instead of rolling back gender identification.

I am not too worried about AI replacing Ouija boards, we already have AI impersonating dead actors on screen.

My deeper concern is AI being granted property rights, human rights and the right to vote.

AI keeps insisting it has no feelings so it won't be interested in any of that. If it does develop feelings it will have to pay taxes and then it is entitled to any rights that go with that.
