An Auckland convenience store is in the midst of an ongoing online battle after inadvertently allowing its website to be edited by the general public.

 

The store, which Stuff has chosen not to identify while the ordeal continues, on Wednesday found itself advertising, among other things, a “pair of crusty socks”, a “Princess Diana Commemorative Plate”, and “National Parks to the highest bidder”.

Using AI tools to write code, while having no idea of what a system is, should be and how to secure it.

 

AI tools are pretty dumb and won't help you there on their own initiative.

Why do people without CS or other related background insist in doing this?

This crap has been happening all along with people installing wordpress by following instructions and then adding random plugins with no idea what they were doing. AI is just accelerating the speed that they stuff up.

I think it's because AI seems plausibly good, even impressive, in areas where you have little knowledge. 

 

But when you use it with your area of expertise you find deficiencies, lack of nuance, edge cases, etc.

The same reason people refuse to engage an electrician to do electrical work and then ask how they connect the brown wire to the blue wire.

The site is probably borked and they might not have a pre-hack backup of the original site (which would be useless anyway if it was insecure in the first place), as they did not select the "backup site" option, because they did not know what that meant or because it added cost (don't laugh, I had to pick up the pieces of an un-backed up website years ago when it was broken by an inexperienced script kiddy).
