Lilly: Thank you for your help. I have downloaded and install the maps as you explained. So now I must be having some kind of problem with what I'm doing next. I then open up maps and GPS pos is at the bottom for about three seconds and then it is replaced with a X. So am I meant to go into the map and get GPS position from there or something different?

When you say X, do you mean a crosshair +, or is it an X over the satellite.

The crosshair shows your global position, if you have never got a satellite position before, then the GPS position will probablly be set to Finland or somewhere else in Europe (mine was).

The X over the satellite means that the phone isn't connected to the satellite (the satellite's haven't locked on yet). For the first connection, you may have to go outside and wait for 5 minutes or so before you get a satellite fix, also, if it was an open space like a park or so, it would make it faster. For my first lock, I had to go to the corner of our street where it was a large open space and stand there for about 4 minutes. Now I can get the lock in about 20-30 seconds inside my house. However, it takes forever in Auckland CBD.

Can't beat the burble of that American V8. Ohh yea!

Yes the quality of the Google Maps is far superior to the Nokia one we have at the moment. Lets hope that we get upgraded to something approaching the Google map in the near future.
I dont see any easy way of saving the map data as it is just loaded into phone memory and overwritten as you move.

I'm supposed to respect my elders, but it's getting harder and harder for me to find one now.

Hey guys,

Picked up my Nokia N95 yesterady, latest firmware checked and it's awesom with SIP and all it's tools.

Just wondering if anyone has managed to find a 3rd party mapping software that works well in NZ?

Wow, I see what you mean, I was just looking at the demo.

Hey there, i'm trying Mgmaps however when loading the app it only shows the current screen, i.e. a map of NZ then I cant zoom or do anything, I've set the GPS to internal and tried both Default (old) and New method (alpha) for GPS read line, however from the looks the GPS is tracking fine but the images dont load when I move or zoom.

Any suggestions?>

Try going to options > gps > where am i

teh that works but it doesnt display the images for the map till i turn the device off and back on. Once on I can see my location on the map, however I can scroll left,right,up,down but the map doesn't update.

For Mobile Google Maps, the map data is downloaded as you need it, unlike the Nokia Map which you download in one hit. Therefore, with the MGM app, you need to have an internet connection which means Vodafone data charges

No, its a seperate app and unfortunately not of much use as you need an internet connection to update the map data as you move so would be quite expensive. Also, it does not have navigate facilities which hopefully we will get with the Nokia map data when (if?) it is updated.
Still being amazed by all the features of this phone, its my first "smart phone" what an eye opener. Have you tried Sport Tracker yet?

I'm supposed to respect my elders, but it's getting harder and harder for me to find one now.

This is true, however mine still doesnt work on both WLAN or HSDPA where I have a 200mb plan on my sim card.

Yea, I downloaded it on Tuesday night and went for a drive around the block. It is really amazing. I just love tracking where I have driven. In fact, when I went for my drive on Tuesday night, one of the streets that goes of our street is a dead end, I used the whole turning bay at the end of the road (not that big), but it still gave me the bubble where I turned around. I wish that you could create your own maps using the data recorded from Sports tracker as it gave an accurate representation of our road and the streets around it.

Sports tracker is a wonderful application. I love it :)

Its a great phone, just hoping we get a better map system than the current 5mb one which is pretty hopeless. Dont know of any 3rd party software that will fill in.
What version of firmware does your phone have BTW?

I'm supposed to respect my elders, but it's getting harder and harder for me to find one now.

Anyone reading through 21+ pages will get lost in here... Better to create a new discussion about maps, other about software upgrades, etc... This way people can keep an eye on each individual issue/solution more easily.
