Slightly off topic, while I'm asking these sort of questions, does anyone have any info on the release of the E7?

Looks like a well specced phone with a bigger screen and a physical qwerty key board.

There was an E7 at the recent Nokia Developers Breakfast for attendees to try out. I liked it - if it was already available I'd probably have got that over the N8 as I prefer physical keyboards.

I do work for Nokia, but I can't comment on that particular question for the moment.

E7 is a very nice phone, something we'd hope to see available locally early next year :)

No information on an E7 release date was given. When I asked I got a "we have yet to evaluate whether the phone will be released on the local market" response. Brent's response above sounds very promising in that regard!

Nothing was mentioned about the N9 and much of the morning was spent on Symbian and Qt. Meego got mentioned mainly as being a platform that you can target via Qt. I did talk to Nokia people afterwards and they were very positive about Meego.

I picked up a dark grey N8 at Parallel Imported, Queen St yesterday. Very happy with it so far. The hardware is outstanding, and the software is much much improved over the 5800. Still working on testing all the functions! Looks like I got one from the Phillipines, but I didn't need to do any set up to get 3G connectivity on Vodafone. I just plugged in my (2007 vintage) SIM and it connected. Ovi store especially has improved - free apps are easy to download and install. I haven't tried purchasing any paid apps yet, but will try tonight and let you know how that goes.

I have downloaded the Nokia Internet Radio on my Nokia N8, It's for the S60 version phones, Although its much better than the one I had on my Nokia N95 there seems a little problem with it. When you tune to a radio station then you hide it and try and use the phone or other applications the radio will start cutting off, some application cannot start (Camera) while Internet radio is on.

I hope Nokia will be able to rectify any issue's that maybe causing the phone to perform poorly. I suspect its something in the Internet Radio application.

Q: When using the Nokia Map (GPS ) in NZ (Via Telecom or Vodafone) What is the cost? is the cost counted as a data connection?

Does the GPS starts downloading while you drive?

The maps are downloaded over the data connection. You can use Ovi Suite on a PC to download the NZ maps in advance and store them on the phone so no data connection is used to download maps - much cheaper! It will make a connection to help with the GPS location though but the data usage there is minimal.

You may or may not already have the NZ maps on your phone, depending on where it was originally sold. Load up Ovi Suite to check what you have. If you don't have the NZ maps, you can download them, they are only 19.6MB. I re-downloaded the NZ ones to make sure I had the latest version and the whole country etc. If you want, you can download maps for the whole world - but they are 5.6GB.

The GPS and voice guided navigation works amazingly well - just as good (if not better) than a standalone GPS unit. I believe it may use a little data to assist with navigation if you let it, but it is only a tiny amount, a few KB.

The maps which came with my phone were:

Hong Kong & Macau

Thailand

Vietnam

Thanks Guys, My Nokia N8 already had NZ map. Tried it yesterday and it was amazing (First time GPS map user). Also downloaded a couple of new voices (Surfer Dude, every time you turn he says DUDE) very entertaining especially for the kids.

Also did not use any data during the trip (Bonus)

Glad to hear the gps went well.

I'm VERY impressed with this phone. Tried out the camera flash in the dark last night, and the quality is awesome. Already spent about $20 on apps lol. Angry birds is heaps of fun. Typing this on my phone too.

I was told it would only be available in silver white when I asked. If I had known, I might have waited and picked up one from an authorised reseller...but no worries, I am very happy with my parallel imported one now.
