Hey there

The sub in our home theatre is playing up something chronic - it produces significantly loud pops and crackles, even when there's no signal (or even audio cable plugged in). I've read both here and elsewhere of people having similar problems with this series (it's a Velodyne CHT-8). Not sure if anyone has ideas as to what the problem may be (I'm thinking the power supply, which could be an expensive repair).

Anyway, I'm looking at options of what to replace it with, if it comes to this, and would be interested in some recommendations for something affordable (including secondhand options). It's for a room a bit bigger than 6x4m with 2.1m stud.

My problem with the sound of the current CHT-8 is it's a bit boomy, a bit one-note. This is kinda ok for movies but frustrating for music. So I'm looking for something that works well for both movies and music - ie goes really low and with enough wallop but is also fast. This has had me looking towards a sealed sub rather than a ported one, though I accept this may lead to not quite the same bass extension. I've read many good things about SVS subs, and have looked at the pair of ported and sealed subs they do for $750NZ (PB-1000 versus SB-1000), with the sealed one possibly more likely to meet what I'm after. Has anyone experience with any of the more affordable SVS subs, or any other recommendations for a <$1000 sub?

Many thanks
Jonathan

SVS woofers get great reviews though I've not had any myself.

I'd buy one tomorrow if I needed one, though I'd be looking at a higher end series.

I have only Kef speakers in my system. The sub is a Q400b which I find gives me everything I need in terms of tone and responsiveness but I don't get to fire it up as often as I'd like. Got it from JB Hifi just over a year ago on sale for a good deal less than it's currently being advertised for. The manual for it (showing controls and sockets) can be found here.

If the sub is one note only like a teenagers car, then its normally the positioning of it rather than a problem with the sub itself.

In saying that, a friend had similar issues with their sub and it was a minor repair to get it working properly again, so do look into that and try repositioning the sub when you get it back to sort the sound out.

Another vote for SVS here. I have the SB-1000 and it is great for music. Being sealed it's fast and taut, not at all 'boomy' like most ported subs.

And it does pretty well with movies too. Manages to fill my 5m x 4m room well enough. Impressive given it's only 1 cubic foot! If you want more then go for the SB-13 Ultra. That thing is ground shaking!

I upgraded last year from a mix n match system (Wharfdale, B&W) to dedicated Polk Audio. I went for a 10" woofer to get best balance between boomy and tight bass.

I use my system mainly for Action Movies followed by Music and some occasional gaming.

I went from the CHT12 to a SVS PC13 Ultra.
Wow, I had no idea what I had been missing. Total change from the one note boom you are talking about, to effortless, deep, tight, glorious bass.
I know it's not the price range you are looking at, but SVS are impressive.
45 day trial period as well.

B&W's ASW610 is a very musical sub, with the ability to tweak the level of throw to suit.
Polk's sub is good for the money, but if I had my was, it would be a B&W PV1... or two.

Thanks for all the replies; some good food for thought there. My current sub (CHT10R) has given up completely now! I'd be interested in getting it fixed, even if just to sell, but it can be expensive to even have such faults checked out. So if anyone is interested in a good deal on a sub with a dodgy power supply (in PN) let me know...

My wife's not too worried about us spending up to about $1100, which means the SVS SB2000 is feasible, as is the B&W ASW610. Does anyone have experience of both these subs? Both are well-regarded, but I did see the B&W has a 200w amp- is that really adequate for a sealed sub?

The SVS retailer suggests the PB1000 if my budget can only stretch that far (given it is for both movies and music the ported version goes louder and deeper) but the SB2000 if I can stretch that far. I do like the idea of a sealed sub for more control...

Ported if movies are important.
SVS over B&W every day of the week.

You can thank me after your first listen.

$1,200 for the PB2000
Have you considered that?

TBH, that's currently at the top of my list, despite it being at the total top end of (if not beyond) my budget. My concern (apart from the cost) is that being ported it may not be as tight as the SB2000 for music. Plus it's the size of a bus! Have you heard this and the SB2000, and if so how you would compare them?

Edit- the other downside of both the SB and PB 2000 is the $120 delivery charge!

Better to spend a bit more now - you'll be enjoying it for years to come. You'll never notice the extra few $$$ in a few months, but you *will* still be loving the boom. I can't comment on the difference for musci between the PB2000 and SB2000 - any chance you could audition them?

If you need any more enabling/justification just ask! wink

Yeah, I could audition both but it would be at an additional cost of $240 given shipping a second sub home and then returning one of them back to the retailer, ie it's not a realistic option! Will have to make the call prior so must make the right decision...

Pure Music = sealed. Movie = sealed/ported (depending on how much you hate your neighbours).
Disco/some pop Music = ported.

I've got a Yamaha YST-SW515 paired with my Yamaha NS-777's and I've found it to be pretty decent in my rather large lounge. Only other setup I can compare it to is my mates KEF Q400b + Q900's and I can't say either sounds better than the other.

Picked it up on TM for only $350 :)
