Mum in laws CD player has died.

It's part of an old Sony system (HDC-A17K).

It's important for her to be able to listen to radio, CD and vinyl (and no, she would prefer not to buy a new one, not even 2nd hand).

She's got a 2nd stereo where CD and radio works just fine.

Is it possible to connect the vinyl player to this one?

On the Sony stereo, where it's currently connected, it's plugged into phono at the back.

Can it be connected to Line In on the other stereo?

If so, is there a converter from phono (2 cables) to Line In (which is one cable)?

Yes, what you need is a phono pre-amplifier.

eg.

Behringer Ultra Compact Phono Preamp PP400

Stereo Mini Kit Phono Turntable RIAA

You then need 2xRCA to 3.5mm adapter to plug it in

3.5mm to 1.8 stereo female to 2 male RCA

Might be better to find a 2nd hand stereo after all, as I can get it for same price as the pre amp

Good luck finding something of that vintage where everything works properly, CD players have a habit of dying.

I did this for an older family friend by joining the phono from an old broken Philips to a more modern Sony. I used the $30 Jaycar pre-amp and the sound quality was surprisingly good. Not difficult to do at all.

Well, googling that model came up with the very listing you've pulled that image from!

Looking at that photo up-close shows there's a "phono" input, which would totally indicate this unit has a built-in pre-amp. This is even stated in the auction's description.

I don't know a lot about this, which is why I'm asking here.
Wasn't sure if the built in pre-amp still would be good enough for her existing record player.
I would hate her to go and spend the money, if the stuff didn't work.

Got the Denon stereo. Works well, but can't connect record player. There's a tiny power cable, which went into the old Sony stereo. There's nowhere to power the Sony record player on the Denon, from what I can see.

Looks specific to the Sony. Either find out what voltage it is and make an adapter, or buy a generic record deck that uses it's own power supply.

Looks like it just needs a 12V DC power supply. Jaycar should be able to supply, but you'll need to come up with an adapter. Personally I'd cut the end off both and solder, but you could get away with a chocolate block (also available from jaycar).
