Apologies in advance if this has been answered in another post...

I am trying to setup my old home theatre system in my new house, for which I have bought a new HD Epson home theatre projector. The problem I have is that I currently have an old Bose Lifestyle sound system which of course does not have any HDMI capability.

I would like the capability to split the HDMI output from my laptop (or blu ray player when I finally get one) so that the HDMI video signal goes to the projector while the audio signal somehow gets converted from HDMI to RCA so it can then go into the Bose system for processing the surround sound.

At the moment, when I plug the HDMI cable into my laptop and play a movie from it, the analogue audio output from the laptop is cut off and the only audio output is via HDMI - which is going into the projector. So I can only listen to the sound through the projector speakers (which are crap) unless I run a 3.5mm plug to RCA cable from the projector back to the RCA input at the Bose. That's all a bit ridiculous...

As much as I'd like to just buy a whole new audio system, I'd like to get a few more years out of the Bose. I looked online at the Jaycar website, but couldn't find any device that might do the job.

Can anyone think of another way around it? Or point me in the direction of a switch box that has HDMI input, with HDMI video + RCA audio output?

Could you change the Default Playback device in your laptop sound settings to the headphone output and use a 3.5mm to RCA cable to your amp?

you *should* be able to choose another audio output on your PC.  What's it running?

Search Jaycar for AC1724, AC1770, AC1772, AC1707, AC1721. Possibly more.

HDMI audio extractor, or a HDMI switch with a analog out will do the job.

However, it seems that some of them force the source into a certain colourspace even if the display and source support something better, and when I use one between chromecast and garage TV I get really bad coloration of gradients that is not there when connected directly. The one in my HDMI matrix is fine, this was a cheap-as standalone one I had before that.

I was in the same situation as the OP when re purposing my old amp. I use one of these  to split the HDMI audio into signal into RCA

Yup - HDMI with an analogue breakout. As per usual, it's all about a quality unit that won't cause havoc.

Thanks for the info - that's exactly what I had in my head. Yet another gadget to try and find power for, but that's the price of trying to stick with old tech for too long lol.

They almost all run off 5v and take 100mA or so at worst, so grab some USB to 5.5/2.1mm cables off aliexpress too, and plug them into the USB ports on things nearby, or use a hub on an old cellphone charger to run them.
