My HDHomeRun Connect is on its way from Nicegear.

I am very confused about which software is 'best' for watching and recording NZ FreeView with a single software package.

I can handle the software, all my wife wants is it to reliably get EPG information and for it to be recorded.

I think my options so far are NextPVR, Media Portal and HDHomeRun DVR (not free)

I use window 10 and have a Synology DS216Play NAS.

Ideally, I would like software to run on the NAS.

What would you recommend to:

Just run on Windows 10 (I don't usally keep my laptop on 24x7, but will need to).
Just run on the Synology NAS (if there is anything).

PC: HP ProBook 470G1 (Windows 10 Pro), Intel NUC7I5BNH (Windows 10 Pro), Dell Inspiron 7591 2n1 (Windows 11 Pro)
Net: Grandstream 1 x GWN7062, 1 x GWN7610, 1 x GWN7665
Storage: Synology DS216play NAS, 2 x 6TB
Media: 3 x Amazon FireTV. Echo, Dot, Spot
TV: 2 x Samsung H6400 55" LED TV, Panasonic TH-P50G10Z 50" Plasma TV
Mobile: Samsung Galaxy A52 5G
Wearable: Gear S3 Frontier

It sounds like HDHomeRun DVR would be the best option for you, and it has a NAS install option available. HDHomeRun provides its own EPG data, so that doesn't require any extra setup.

Personally, I use MediaPortal, but with terrestrial (DVB-T) you need to configure EPG Collector to pull the full guide data to an XML file, then tell MediaPortal to import it. This is all do-able, it just requires a fair amount of initial configuration.

Another option would be TVHeadEnd which you can run on the NAS directly. I haven't tried that myself.

I think Plex might have been trialing DVR capabilities.

They have, like hdhomerun dvr needs specific (newer) versions of the hdhomerun. Of which the connect is one.

The 3 other stalwarts, Mediaportal, nextpvr and mythtv also have support for the hdhomerun.

I use DVBLogic, works well. Uses OTA EPG which is nice. I've got DVBLogic installed on a Synology DS916plus. They have a free trial.

I used their wizard, NZ wasn't there and so received the message ...

DVBLink TVAdviser is a regional product and is currently available only for a limited number of countries.

Be aware plex with HDhomerun requires a plex subscription.

You dont need TV Advisor just dvblink, dvblink will pull the EPG from the OTA broadcast. You will need to go into the settings to map the channels to the guide data, heres my EPG in DVBLogic

Now have DVDLink running on my Synology DS216Play with DVDLink Server and DVDLink TVSource (trial) installed.

It has scanned and found what looks every NZ channel.

However, how do I get the EPG.

Starting from Sources>EPG Source it says 'Add Source'. Click on the '+' button. Give it a name e.g XMLTV-1 (default).

Then it shows a directory path, and it wants a XMLTV URL.

What do I use here?

EDIT> Just now looked and the EPG Guide is now up and running. So I assume, I did not need to do anything. It was (perhaps) just taking time.

As a side note, this could be a good way to replace the TiVos? $60 a year for HD HomeRun DVR sub seams reasonable? And NZ is one of the few countries supported too!

Not sure any software would be worth paying a yearly sub for. A one off I could justify. But any of the free solutions are pretty damn good.

Late last week, I opened up a ticket at SiliconDust to see if I could get a trial period. Not heard anything back yet.

I tend to loathe software companies that expect payment before you can see the software. Even a 3 day trial is better than nothing. DVBLink have a 20 day trial.

Same with Plex (Pass), I have no idea on how well it will work in a NZ environment and all that I have to go on are other posts in forums.

I've used NextPVR (and GB-PVR before that) exclusively for all TV for probably close to 12 or 13 years now. It's a rock solid solution that gives me everything I need and quite simply just works with my HDHomeRun

The web site says it is for windows. To me that means that my laptop would have to run 24 x 7 and I would have to be mindful of when I could shut down the laptop for windows updates etc.

I would prefer any such S/W to run on my Synology NAS.

Nevertheless, I can give it a go.
