Sharp Introduces NZ’s Largest LCD Television

Sharp Corporation announces the pending release of New Zealand’s largest LCD domestic television.
The Quattron 70 inch LCD television will be available to Kiwis on December 3rd — just in time for Christmas.

It seems appropriate that Sharp — always the innovators — should release this product on the eve of their 100th anniversary, which they celebrate next year. They were, in fact, the first to introduce LCD screens with their calculators in 1973.

Sharp Managing Director, Jan Nicol says, “We are proud to introduce the first consumer 70 inch LCD television to the NZ market. It reinforces a growing trend in the industry towards larger screens… this panel offers the ultimate viewing experience in home entertainment.”

Kiwis will soon be able to experience Quattron Quad-Pixel technology — a first within the industry.
Quattron adds a fourth sub-pixel (yellow) to the conventional mix of red, green and blue, producing breath-taking results. Viewers experience:

• never before seen colours
• a wider gamut and brighter picture, requiring less power
• over eight million sub-pixels (standard is six million)
• greater power and energy efficiency.

“Sharp released the first 65 inch LCD television to the NZ market in 2007. The arrival of this panel confirms that we remain at the cutting edge of large screen LCD technology,” says Nicol.

Probably a simple case of our market being too small
...and our eyes are closer together Wink

Except for this pesky one manufactured a year earlier,

Is there anything in that press spin that is actually true....

Sounds like we are being treated like mushrooms

from the US

"Our 80-inch AQUOS TV delivers more than double the screen area of a 55-inch TV, for an amazing viewing experience,” said John Herrington, president, Sharp Electronics Marketing Company of America. “It’s truly like nothing else on the market. Consumers want bigger flat panel TVs for deeper, more immersive viewing experiences and that’s exactly what Sharp’s delivering here.”The new Aquos has a full suite of smart TV apps and features like Netflix, CinemaNow, Vudu, Amazon, Hulu, as well as built-in Wi-Fi. For gamers, it has “Vyper Drive,” a mode that reduces lag between games and the 1080p 120Hz TV screen. It’s about 3 inches thick and weighs about 130 lbs, light enough for two people to carry. But don’t whip out the credit card just yet, because you may not have a high enough limit. The 80-inch Aquos will hit retail in “early October” for $5,500. But if you can afford it, this TV can basically turn a 9-foot viewing space into a movie theater."

Search for Sharp Memory Display which is being developed by Sharp.  It is e-ink with video speed.  Obviously grey scale, but targeted for e-books etc. as it consumes virtually no power for a static display.  I've got one sample at work.  Sharp does a lot of R&D, not necessarily focused on consumers, but certainly on panel technology.

However, ignore the spin the press puts on articles.

South African consumers are about 10" behind NZ (talking about TVs here).
