Hey guys,

Having issues with my Veon TV's. I have a 43" 4k and a 65" 4k that I got recently. My 2015 15" MacBook pro cannot send a 4K 60hz signal to it for some reason, I got a displayport 1.2 adaptor and hdmi 2.0 but still only showing as 30hz. Apple site says it's capable of 4k60 with the proper adaptors (which I have)

I've tried everything, each of the 3 HDMI inputs give me the same result. Either I'm doing something wrong, or the Veon Tv's are not capable of a 4k 60hz signal. My xbox one s arrives tomorrow (shipped from Canada), so I will see if it's capable of displaying 4k 60hz (from the xbox site, it shows that it's possible) and I'll see.

So my question is: can the Veon 4k Tv's display 60hz? Anyone else figure out this issue? Please help.. Thanks!

Other than that these Tv's are amazing. A little backlight bleed, but definitely worth it to me for the price!

Your macbook may have hdmi 2.0 output but does the Veon have hdmi 2.0 input?

I assume it does.. why would a 4k tv not have hdmi 2.0?... also to clarify, my MacBook doesn't have hdmi2.0 I have to go through the displayport 1.2 port which has 4k60 capabilities.

warehouse website says the model they are selling now does. so it should have. hmm .. can't help you there sorry. can you select 60Hz on your "settings" (don't have a mac)

As well as discrete HDMI1 HDMI2 HDMI3 TV AV1 type inputs.

If there are there, then this becomes significantly more viable.

Just updating this (thought I had already) but there are no discrete codes offered in the Harmony IR code set for the V55UHDS - annoying.

And also, none of the remote buttons other than power will cause the TV to wake up.

So the only way to run this TV from any Harmony type device is to 'know' the current power and source state, and work from there.

Ugh.

The Harmony script does, however, work really well - almost flawless as long as nobody picks up the original remote and changes the state unbeknownst to Harmony by switching a device on or off or changing a source.

As long as you say "Alexa turn off the TV" to switch off your TV, decoder and soundbar then next time you say "Alexa turn on the TV" or "Alexa Turn on Netflix" it just works and works well. For my TV it actually has to send <Source> then an <Up> or <Down> (or several) to change source. Sounds terrible but seems to work transparently.

The Veon TV takes a long time to power up - about 20 secs so the script knows to delay after power-on before changing source etc.

I picked up a Veon 55" 4K on the $499 deal today. Model SRO554K2017-P6 - https://www.thewarehouse.co.nz/p/veon-55-inch-4k-ultra-hd-led-lcd-tv-sro554k2017-p6/R2378989.html

I'm leaning toward returning it because a) awful sound, b) the finish is cheap glossy plastic, but the display models (presumably the ones without P6 suffix) have a nice matte gunmetal metallic finish, and c) picture quality on 1080p sources isn't really that great.

Bit of a review:

Sound:

Awful. Realy, really bad. Hollow, lots of speaker reverb. No bass. More importantly, no midrange. It's slightly better than the Panasonic 32D400Z I have in the bedroom, but it's a pretty awful set of speakers. On the plus side it has analogue audio output in the form of 2x RCA jacks - perfect for plugging in a cheap old stereo or something.

You'll want external sound even for watching the news.

Picture:

TLDR; Better than expected, needs tweaking as OOTB is bad, poor scaler.

Panel finish is on the glossier side and reflects a lot in daylight. Brightness is good, needs to be turned down for night time viewing (42 on this set is best), and turned up for daytime viewing.

Black level is surprisingly good. It's not OLED of course, but it's better than most IPS I've seen.

Colour is poor out of box, but better with increased saturation from service menu (Source , 2 5 8 0. I used 60, default 50). I'd take this over an older IPS panel. I do feel it would benefit a lot from different gamma curves - black point diminishing returns at 42/100 brightness, white is still very bright at this point but you lose details in darker colours.

Don't bother with any of the modes except standard or user. Dynamic is awful.

Backlight bleed is minimal, just a light glow around the edge and only really noticeable in a fully black screen. Acceptable even on a budget Jap/Korean TV.

I can't give much comment on the 4K support as I only have one poor source, but for 1080, 720, and 576i content, the scaler could be better. Lots of jaggies on diagonal lines, and lots of flickering under motion from high contrast elements. 720 and SD fare better than 1080 here, but are very pixellated as you would expect on a native 4K panel.

Motion is your standard 50Hz affair, nothing special here. Some overshoot that might bother those sensitive.

Other notes:

USB media player is terrible, don't bother. Turn-on time is OK, but no feedback other than red light going off so it was a little confusing at first. Remote control is a little cheap feeling but it's OK.

VESA mount is very low down on the TV (almost at the bottom. WHY?!).† Could be a deal breaker for anyone with an existing wall mount.

The -P6 model suffix has a glossy black plastic finish. The display models seem to not have this suffix (I discovered this after opening the box), and are a much nicer matte gunmetal metallic finish. Damn.

Overall:

For $499, it's probably about right. I don't think it's for me, but for someone with external sound wanting a basic dumb screen, it's perfectly watchable.

I wish we had some decent options for reasonable quality panels in dumb TVs.

That's not good to hear, the finish was one of the things that was of interest on that one to me, gloss black is a big turn off.

I really wish that these TVs would have a menu option to turn them into a monitor so all the tuner, media player, non HDMI inputs etc all just went away and it would turn on and off with the HDMI signal from an input like a monitor does. Ive ripped my small TVs out of the workspace because they are a PITA with turning off because the android box has gone to sleep and then not turning back on again when I wake it etc. So much better with a 22" 1080p cheapie monitor, but as soon as you go large or 4k monitors become stupid prices.

Yeah agreed.

The finish was one of the main draws for me too, they looked really classy. The glossy black plastic does not look classy at all. Interestingly, the feet are the same matte metallic finish as the floor models (just black instead of gunmetal), and feel quality. Just the TV...

Are you sure that there is not an option to turn the TV on under the menu? I have a Veron 4K 65" which is a beauty and when I turn on the chromecast, by plugging in it's power lead, the TV turns on as well.

Some images and video from Veon (taken with my phone, so not the best quality), should highlight what the blacks are like. In reality it's quite a vibrant panel especially front on once you boost the saturation. The letterboxing in these pictures show the black levels, and are worse in pictures than in real life - the pictures probably represent the out of box performance. Dim the brightness by 5-7 clicks and you'll halve the visible black level on letterboxes etc. Also shows the TV in bright situation - as you can see the picture is definitely watchable, glare is a problem in daytime.

I have the 65" non smart, and recently bought a PS4 Pro so finally able to poke a decent signal through it and am more than impressed with the picture quality, especially since we are only talking a total investment of $1500 all up

Can't recommended them enough as a genuine bang for buck proposition

That's thru HDMI cec not on presence of a video signal like a monitor. Cec doesn't go thru HDMI splitters etc so hopeless for screens around the workshop to watch YouTube or twitch on while working.

Have there actually been any large TVs from veon at all? I know the same OEM that does them sells 84" to other brands, but I have only ever seens 65s in store at the warehouse.

I would say 65" is large, but they do 75" too.

The 75 seemed to be a very limited batch, all gone now and it had the hopelessly outdated android "smart" stuff in it which if its like their previous attempt will just fail most of the time.
