Yeah, I think you'll get a hierarchy of quality with HD depending on the source and the filming situation and the post production. Field camera situations won't be as good as stationery or studio camers etc. Overall from what I've seen I'm pretty impressed with the potential and broadcast TV is set to give Blu-ray a run for it's money.
After my experiences after the installation I would recommend you perform the following checks before the installer leaves
1) In a multiroom install check the Mysky1 still receives TV3, Sky Movies 1, Sky Movies Great, Sky Sports 1, Sky Sports 2. (Channel not available will indicate the wrong skycard is being used.) 2) Check Mysky 1 can still record and playback a programme. (let it record for a minute then try playaback) (Recording interupted....Please wait indicates the card is not setup correctly) 3) Check the channel descriptors say TV3 HD, Sky MOvies HD etc as this indicates you are pointing to the correct mux. (Descriptors that only say TV3, Sky Movies 1 etc indicates you are only getting SD feeds) 4) Check live pause works for channels other than TV1 or TV2. Also check record playback works. (Message C029 Playback in unavailable indicates the card has not been completely activated. You will be able to watch but not record)
Hopefully a few checks before the Tech leaves will save aggravation later on.
This is all good advice. I had all of these errors after the tech had left. The tech returned the next day after Sky phoned him. He said that Sky had to 'hit' my cards 5 times before it came right. I am a bit surprised that Sky didnt do that after phoning them first as I suggested over the phone but apparently I dont know anything. I think what happened to cause it is that the tech pulled out the card on the old MySky and put it into the MySkyHDi. It didnt like that. He put a new one into the MySky1. This lost access to all my old recordings too saying 'you were not authorised at the time of recording' Someone above has said not to push the reset button becuase you lose all your settings. I don't think this is correct, and as this new box locks up quite a bit you need to reset often. You DO lose everything that is currently being recorded which you didnt in hte old MySky, but not any future recording settings or ones that have already been recorded. All fixed now. I wish they could sort out these lockups though.
Just got home,My Sky HDi installed while I was at work.Looks really good,I too think the Sd channels look better.Installer had moved the digital audio cable off the note I left him to tell him to use,to leave me a note to tell me that Sky don't supply digital audio cables!Plugged it in myself.Main problem is that he didn't leave the manual,so downloaded off the net myself,Sky are posting me one-hopefully!
So I had mine installed yesterday. My observations so far:
- Firmware seems unstable. Unit froze when I was playing around in the guide. Reset button didnt work so had to do a plug pull. - TV3 HD - SD content looks much better than it did with the old box, but HD content is a long way off Freeview|HD quality. Flicking between Freeview|HD and Sky TV3 HD last night during Star Wars there was a big difference. Seems Sky have taken the low bitrate path again. - Coming from a regular Pace box (Not MySky) I find the guide much easer to navigate, however I do miss having the channel sound still on when in the guide/menus.
Overall very happy with it - mainly becuase it now makes recording Sky channels much much easier - and I can actually record shows in Widescreen (And in some cases HD) without having to have the decoder on that channel, just a little disappointed in the quality of the HD. As we do not currently have Movies or Sport, and TV3 HD left alot to be desired (And I have Freeview|HD now) I may not keep the HD ticket once my 4 months of free Multiroom are up and I dont get that/the HD ticket for free.
Others waiting for install, my $49 was C.O.D. as well so make sure you have some money on you.
Why did you get HDi so soon if you didn't get sport and movies ? Those and TV3 are the only channels in HD so why would you bother. You should of stuck with Freeview. We got it soley for Sky sports and movies, anything other channels they might eventually roll out will be a bonus, not worth getting just for the upscaling of the other channels, you might as well of got MySky 1 for the PVR and used Freeview for TV3.

Going by the recording capability, doesn't seem to be a hell of a lot more than our MySky1 which has plenty ( unless you are recording HD ), technology is the same if you are not recording HD and the price is cheaper for MySky1 because don't pay the HD ticket, you don't seem to be using the HD channels anyway because you watch TV3 via Freeview. Upgrade later to HDi and multiroom is only $49 anyway and you get two PVR's which gives you heaps of recording capability. Seems silly the way you have gone about it for the way you are using it.
I dont think so at all. We have multiroom now so am not paying an HD ticket, and when the time comes to get movies back on I will simply make a phone call, rather than having an installer come over, again, and install another decoder. I dont want MySky in the bedroom.
I am also paying the $15 per month for the decoder - which I cant do with MySky1. If I have the MySky HDi for less than 40 months it works out cheaper anyway, and there is a VERY good chance I will not be in the country in 40 months
