I didn't get to do an information post for the PULP FICTION (1994) 30th Anniversary Limited Edition set. I thought that some of you would like to know what we get for our JBAU - $99 or EzyDVD - AU$96.97.

JBNZ have the Standard Edition for NZ$41.98. Wait for the Boxing Day sales and get it for $33.58.

Does anybody have any insight as to why so many AU(NZ) 4K releases only include the 4K disc, whereas the same release in the UK etc seem to include the blu ray as well? And often the 4K single disc version is more expensive than importing from the UK. Are the local distributors deliberately trying to kill the market or something? Bizarre.

A few years ago "Alita" was advertised as including the Blu-ray, but didn't actually have it. I returned it: I didn't actually have the ability to play UHD discs at the time, and I was just picking them up when they were the same/similar price, so I could future-proof.

Even now, although I can play them now, I still mainly use the Blu-rays because most of the time watching movies on my HD projector is more enjoyable than on the comparatively-small UHD TV.

I'm wondering the same thing as well as to the decision. Not only the UK, but I'm an American living in NZ and our 4K's not only have the blu's, but also digital copies to boot. My assumption is that it's cheaper to not include the blu and digital copies (perhaps licensing and/or less material?) and selling it at a higher price point equals more profit, particularly in NZ where I also assume it may be more costly to procure items. Again, all hypotheses, but would be cool to hear from anyone who actually knows the ins and outs.

It's a sad day when LG stops producing Bluray players—the last of the big names in the market.

I think that it may be the studios that have decided to leave out the Blu-ray discs for Australia/NZ 4K releases, not the distributors. We still have the option on some releases, to buy the SteelBook Edition, which usually includes the Blu-ray, albeit more expensive.

As physical media becomes even more of a niche product, its highly likely that SteelBooks will become the only way to get a "premium" 4K film on disc. Importing is definitely the way to go if you want the best product for your money. Its just a matter of making sure that the Blu-ray is Region B compatible, as some of the US releases are Region A locked. Amazon's free shipping option (spend US$49 in one order) are also a good way to get your imports at a reasonable price

Also, Sony and Panasonic haven't introduced a new 4K Blu-ray player for some time now. I fear that what is available now, is our final choice.

I have an ageing Panasonic bluray and a newer Sony.

A couple of months ago I bought a second Sony and tucked it away in long term storage, for this very reason.

Is 3 enough … ?

There's a couple of uber priced boutique options - Magnetar and Reavon who have released players in the past few years. The Panasonics seem to be very well regarded so maybe there's no impetus to develop a new model? The Sony on the other hand grumble grumble.. although it has been well behaved recently and not locking up during playback.. touch wood.

It's just been brought to my attention that JBAU have added a SteelBook sub section to their website. There are 50 titles and several are available in a Buy 2 Get 1 Free offer.

The SteelBooks are also still in their 4K UHD section.

Several posts ago, I mentioned that the Dwayne Johnson, Chris Evans Christmas movie... RED ONE had been panned by the critics. But what do they know? The audience score on Rotten Tomatoes is 90% and certified hot.

Its an Amazon/MGM production which is now available to stream on Amazon Prime. Apparently it was originally going to go straight to streaming, but the powers that be decided to give it a 30 day theatrical release to try and recoup some of the US$200 Million plus that it cost to produce. It raked in US$168 Million, so it was a good decision. And Amazon have a Christmas hit to offer to their subscribers.
