The sixth film in Sony's Spider-Man Universe; KRAVEN THE HUNTER was released on December 13th in US theatres. Critics, and some audience reviews are scathing; Yet, many of the audience reviews are five stars. Apparently the action scenes really carry the film, although several reviews make comment on the ADR (Automated Dialogue Replacement) and effects being a bit iffy. Seems like its one of those films that we need to see for ourselves, and come to our own conclusion. Standard and SteelBook already announced at JBAU.

Released by Paramount Pictures in the US on December 20th, and already announced for a standard release at JBAU, is SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 3. Most of the cast from the previous two films return, with the addition of Keanu Reeves as the voice of Sonic's latest adversary; Shadow the Hedgehog. Krysten Ritter also joins the live action cast. Reviews are mostly positive, and the film should be good for a family movie night.

From New Line Cinema/Warner Bros. Animation and announced for a Standard and SteelBook release at JBAU in 2025 is THE LORD OF THE RINGS: The War of the Rohirrim. An anime film set 183 years before the Peter Jackson original trilogy. Voice actors include Bryan Cox and Miranda Otto. The film has received mixed reviews from critics and positive reviews from the audience since its wide release in the US on December 13th, and is already available to stream there.

Oof. Like Morbius, I think the positive ratings are being misinterpreted by the producers. It's more of a car crash rating system... The ROI on these discs is going to sting them hard 😂

A film that I knew nothing about appeared on the JBAU website last week; ANORA is a low budget film that is making waves on Social Media because the actors didn't have an "intimacy coordinator" assigned for the various intimate scenes. The uproar likely has much to do with Blake Lively recently suing her It Ends with Us director/co-star for sexual harassment. As others have said on various websites... "They are consenting adults, who can make their own decisions".

The leading lady; Mikey Madison is being touted for an Oscar at this year's Academy Awards. The film is in the Comedy/Drama/Romance genre, and is a hit with both critics and audiences.

Happy New Year to you all. 2025 continues to bring new release announcements, and promises to be a bumper year for collector's. In the new releases for NZ, I have added Stand By Me, which has been brought forward from January 15. The Australian release of Wicked has been pushed back to February 26th. As I previously stated. I am going 100% Digital this year, mainly for the economics of it. However, I will keep this thread up to date, as I still have plenty of interest in the physical media market. LG has discontinued all Blu-ray players, including the UBK80 and UBK90, UHD Blu-ray players, with remaining units only available while stocks last. The announcement echoes similar moves from OPPO in 2018 and Samsung in 2019. This leaves only Sony and Panasonic as providers of optical disc players, and they haven't released any new models for several years.

This is a blow for physical media collector's, and if you are sticking with the disc format, you may be well advised to buy a back up player now.

However, in a statement to Flatpanels HD, LG Korea stopped short of confirming a definitive global exit from the optical disc player market, leaving the door open for a return if demand picks up (yeah, right). For now, a few old models remain available in markets such as America and Europe, but only until inventory runs out.

Due for a January 23rd theatrical release in New Zealand is A COMPLETE UNKNOWN, a Bob Dylan biopic starring Timothée Chalamet as Dylan. The 60's were my teenage years, and Bob Dylan was one of my idols at that time. I learned how to play acoustic guitar and I have several Dylan songs in my "repertoire". I didn't like his music when he went "electric" in the mid sixties, but I have mellowed somewhat over the years. Still, his acoustic period from 1961 - 1965 approx. produced his best songs in my opinion. One of his many girlfriends; Joan Baez (Monica Barbaro) is also featured, along with Pete Seeger (Edward Norton) and Johnny Cash (Boyd Holbrook).

Needless to say, I am excited for this film which has already released in the US to excellent reviews. Listening to today's music, shows that the times are truly changin'"
