Has anyone seen those TCL TVs you can get from JB Hi Fi?

Yep bought the 55" one for $798 on Friday.

Never heard of the brand and thought it was an inhouse brand like Soniq or Veon but then saw Heathcotes, Farmers, Appliance Shed selling the brand so I did some research (googling). Turns out they're a reasonably big outfit (3rd largest tv supplier based on volume). I'm liking it to where Huawei were say 5 years ago when no one knew who they were.

Anyway never was too keen on smart tv's , after hearing of the tv manufacturers abandoning support and apps no longer working. Always preferred a separate box which could be upgraded. This 55" comes with android tv 6.0 and it's nice, really nice - better than any android box I've ever used.

Setup was a breeze - turned the tv on, fired up my android phone and then "ok google, set up my device" and it was away. Didn't have to connect to my wifi or anything.

I was setting it up running netflix, installing Kodi and linking that to my network for streaming, playing around with the various apps, after 1.5 hours it occurred to me to see how the free to air tv works.

TV takes around 30 secs to boot up but that's not uncommon for android tv.

Comes with a decent range of apps installed - GoLive for chinese channels, Freeview Plus (although I notice some programs (like Young Sheldon) don't seem to work), netflix, youtube. Has the playstore plus their own TCL app store.

UMI is responsive and remote works well. Can use my phone as well (I was on the loo changing channels to annoy my wife while she watched tv - TMI?)

Can't common on picture quality as my standards are fairly low. Same with sound.

3 x HDMI, 1 x USB 2.0, 1 x USB 3.0 should cover all my needs.

Builtin chromecast as well

I'm quite happy with it especially for the price. Will be interesting to see if the OS gets updated much.

I'm definitely tempted to get one, don't think I can convince the wife though. We have an old 50" Plasma that is super reflective and pretty awful.

FWIW, The Warehouse seem to have taken off the SRO554K2017-P6 from their website. The non-P6 is still there.

The Warehouse stores (at least those in CHCH) seem to universally display the non-P6 model. They also had their boxing day sale $499 price tags displayed under these display models.

Differences that I can tell:

Matte metallic finish (non-P6) vs cheap black gloss (P6)
~390kWh (non-P6) vs ~430kWh (P6)

I'm not sure whether the Warehouse stores were selling them interchangeably, but I saw P6 and Non-P6 models on the same pallet when I returned my P6. Sneaky sneaky.

Hi guys

First time poster, long time lurker. I'm looking at a smaller Veon to replace a 9-year-old 42" plasma in the den.

Use case: Android box, 99% used for watching live sports streams or Kodi content. Viewing distance 2-3m. Relatively dark space with little/no sun leakage. This is our secondary TV and we have a good Sony upstairs in the lounge.

From reading reviews here and elsewhere, I'm after the best screen as the Android box does all the smart stuff.

The TV is currently mounted on a custom box (i.e. some heavy ply I screwed together) so my preference is a TV with a central stand as width is restricted. A 49 with edge stands will not fill.

Currently tempted by the Veon SRO482016 at $499, which has central mount. Probably willing to spend up to $800-900 so an alternative might be the Panasonic 49" at $749 TH-49E400Z (note this seems to have edge mounts - can these be fitted more centrally or will I need to make another box?)

Given my use case, what would you guys think?

Veon seems to have a pretty good rep here as far a video quality goes. A lot of people have commented on it. I only use mine as a (streaming) monitor but I am very happy with it. Everyone also agrees that the sound quality is appalling and is to be replaced with something acceptable as soon as possible.

My Veon is 42 inch. I bought it on special a couple of years ago for $300. It is the best value for money I have ever scored. I think these are great sets.

I have the 43" and 65" 4K .. both run 4k at 60hz.. So I'm assuming 55" would as well.

Thanks @bobbymac, funny that reviews on the warehouse site say they only do 30hz.trying to decided between a veon and the hitachi

Hi, wife kindly bought me the 55" 4K Veon yesterday (SRO554K2017-P6) and TWH is currently throwing in a Chromecast Ultra with the TV!

Very happy so far - I know a few people said the P6 had a tacky bezel but I dont think it looks bad at all.

Was wondering if anybody had tweaked the sound/video settings and whether they would share what they were using?

Thanks for this link, as that offers me a solution for when we buy a new TV for the HT, at which point the current one would go into the house. We have a center speaker that currently sits below the level of the screen, given it’s an ancient plasma with that enormous bottom bezel, but the replacement TV is far more minimal. I was thinking I’d have to make a base to lift the TV above the speaker, but the larger version of the stand you linked to can take up to 65” sets.

Off-topic: Do you think that stand would raise a Panasonic 50" (2013 E6 with thin bezel) higher than the standard stand? Need to raise the TV by at least half a foot to clear a centre speaker.

I hope I have my spacing right but from what I can see the stand will lift a maximum of 630 mm to the top VESA hole on your TV. IT Art might be able to me more specific.

I hung my TV on the lowest hole on the mount.
