Welcome to the Weekly 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray & SteelBook Release Schedule for Friday January 24th.

Some decent releases from JBNZ this week. Nothing new from Australia. We continue to get lots of new release announcements, and 2025 is shaping up to be a good year for collector's.

I have decided to drop EzyDVD from the schedule. JBAU get all of the same titles plus SteelBook Editions as well. I will leave a link in the Australian section to EzyDVD's webpage for anyone who wishes to check out their pricing.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Click on the post# links for the individual release information (artwork, specs, etc.) where available. Just click on the link and it should take you to the correct post. Then click on the back arrow to return to the schedule.

Individual film artwork and specs will be posted as soon as ALL info is available  •  Release dates are subject to change  •  New Releases will be displayed for one week after release date.

Some imported Arrow titles are available at various JBNZ stores, which aren't advertised on their website and so, are not included in this weekly schedule.

Also, the ALIEN: Romulus imports should have been available today, but so far are still in Pre-order mode.

JB Wellington had Alien Romulus out today, I'm assuming some stores don't have it yet hence why it's still pre-order on the website. Unfortunately no slip on the 4K, but there is a slip on the Blu-ray, although that's cheaper to import yourself (or wait for 20% off sale).

I see that EMILIA PEREZ has received 13 nominations for the 2025 Academy Awards. The film also won a handful of Golden Globe awards. but....audiences hate it. It has had a limited run in theatres worldwide, but not the US. Its a Netflix film and is already available on that streaming service in several countries, but not yet in New Zealand. So, how can such an unpopular film receive so many nominations? Its a foreign language film (Spanish), and it is nominated in that category. Personally, I believe that films nominated in the foreign language category shouldn't be considered for the main category as well. One or the other, but not both. I don't want to upset anyone, so I won't say anything else about the "Oscars", but I'll let the Rotten Tomatoes community have the last word 😁

Not to get all 'political', but I did wonder if this was review-bombed by audiences due to its subject matter, considering the massive discrepancy - 13 Oscar nominations is huge.

But nah, turns out its actually just a really, really shitty movie! Hard to fathom what the Academy members were thinking

Also at the risk of "getting politicial", I note that the synopsis in the screenshot above has been carefully written so as to not mention the controversial plot element.

There has been a concerted shift in recent years for the Academy to be more international in its focus, or at least less America-centric. I certainly have no issue with foreign language films being nominated for best picture, but agree there's an argument that it should then be removed from foreign language category to make way for another picture that warrants the limelight.

The Oscars has a rich history for getting it wrong, and rewarding pictures that don't stand the test of time (Driving Miss Daisy over Goodfellas being the most notorious example), and I tend to expect the worst. But it remains an intriguing competition. After a pretty meager year of cinema going, I've recently watched a real solid bunch. Strongly recommend all of Conclave, Nosferatu and A Complete Unknown, and best of the bunch - Anora. Hope to get to The Brutalist in the next week or so.

Emilia Perez can certainly wait until it hits Netflix. I've seen one clip and until then I didn't realise it was like full-blown OTT musical, which I do tend to struggle with.

I don't agree with the sentiment here that a film should only be considered for one or the other in regards to Best Picture and Best International Feature. If a non-English film's artistic merits are worthy of being the best overall film of the year, then it shouldn't be punished in the international category. I think it's great the Academy has shifted to a more international membership over the last several years, which has helped broaden the scope of nominees in comparison to before, to a certain extent. There's still a lot of work to be done, but it is a lot better.

Note: Driving Miss Daisy didn't win over Goodfellas as the former is a 1989 film whereas Goodfellas is a 1990 film that lost to Dances with Wolves (another controversial pick haha). I liked Daisy, is it Best Pic material? In my mind, no, but it was a rather weak list of nominees, so I do t have much gripe with it.

Whether you agree with the winners or not, all awards carry some controversy. My biggest (and subjective) gripes of Best Picture are:

1941

How Green Was My Valley over Citizen Kane

1952

The Greatest Show on Earth winning over both High Noon or The Quiet Man (my pick)

1985

Out of Africa over The Color Purple

1994

Forrest Gump over Pulp Fiction

1996

The English Patient over Fargo

2002

Chicago over Pianist, The Two Towers (my pick), and Gangs of New York

2005

Crash over Brokeback Mountain

2017

The Shape of Water over Get Out (my pick) Call Me By Your Name, Dunkirk, or Three Billboards

2018

Green Book over Roma

2021

CODA over Drive My Car

I love film talk!
