Nice Guide man :) , So you can record/watch channels simutaniously of seperate transponders? Thats the part im stuck on

YaY!!! nice writeup. the serial cable you are using ..... looks to be a USB to Serial converter ...correct ? and you talk about other card readers..... do you know of others as I would rather go with a native usb version. I was due to pick up a jaycar reader last week but holding off until a bit later.

PS any ideas as to whether the blackgold bts3540 http://shop.blackgold.tv/product/3540.html woudl be suitable wih a jaycar etc reader.....?

Yup, well I could when I tested 2 days ago - recorded Discovery while watching Prime and watched Cartoon network and CNN, granted i had aboutu 6 MDAPIFilter icons in my tray at the time lol

@plehmann - Serial to USB cable from pbtech, I believe there is an Infineon (or Infinity?) USB phoenix reader that works as well.. I will have a hunt for the model).

Not sure about the BTS3540 but I hope so! I'm looking at getting one of those in the near future also - If it works in MediaPortal for DVB-S then it will work with the JayCar reader

Yeah Its definitly not working for me, The second instance of NDSCAM just gives a log error of being unable to communicate with com 1, Ill get one of the Serial to USB comverters and see if that fixes it. Cheers for showing ur setup, I thought this might be the problem but didn't want to spend $30 on a try and see thing, That it works 4 u makes me a bit more sure that this is the problem.

Well on my DVBViewer -> DVBSBridge for DVBViewer -> Vista Media Center with TV Pack solution, I'm losing the Sky signal after a period of time. I get a "No TV Signal" error on all Sky channels.

A reboot fixes this but is not a solution. Is anyone else experiencing this issue?

Hi there, even though I have invested time (much time) in Vista MCE and are looking to go Media Portal as it seems to support multi sky recording, if I install Media Portal will it upset the MCE config.? I guess I will need to stop DVBSBridge as a service and make sure ProgDVB is not running also..?

As long as MCE isn't trying to use your tuners there should be no issues, so stopping DVBSBridge and maybe the MCE services should be all you need to do - I have Vista MCE set up as well as MediaPortal and as long a I don't open MCE MediaPortal works fine

I've just about given up on my setup using the Jaycar reader. I think that DVBSBridge is at fault because it keeps on dropping out and VMC give me a 'No TV Signal' error, or it does not drop the last channel correctly and I get channel conflicts.

If I go back to the STB with IR blaster method, can I map the encrypted Sky channels to the Sky via S-Video feed to get the guide? But I'll probably need 3 tuners anyway, which I don't have space for.

Man this is annoying. And I'm not too popular with the other half here at home at the moment

This looks like the perfect solution to the intregration dilemma I've faced for a while.

My only prob is my HTPC is an Athlon XP 2600 - is much grunt required to use NDS etc?

I assume not - as unlike dodgy alternatives like HVC there isn't brute forcing going on.

Nope, the horse power is not required to run the NDSCAM with the card reader as it intially resets the card at 9600 baud (effective) then steps upto 38400 baud (effective). All the NDSCAM does is act as a middle man to change the language from the signal to an accepted language that the card will listen to. This is part of NDS secuirty to stop people hacking etc.. you can not talk to the card without the CAM loaded, hence why it took so long to be able to do this as the CAM was not released by NDS for so long know one could create a DLL as they didn't know what it looked like or what it did.

The horse power you need is for the app / vista etc.. The DVB-S card should produce a raw MPEG2 stream that your video card should be able to process on the fly, the ProgDVB software just passes the data to the video card via the CAM. If someone invented ProgDVB for DOS you could run it on a slower machine (video drivers also needed of course).

When ProgDVB is running if you look at the Applications / Processes running in Windows it does not crew much CPU or RAM.

AGP 8x Video Card 3650 ATI
Bunch of HDD's
20 Buck Modem for Caller ID
Jaycar Reader and the Magic 45xxx :-)

Ah sweet, I've got 2gb of ram so that's a little breathing space at least. I'm not worried about recording at all so thats a little load off.

I'm curious to see if I have a 45xx now :)

I wish I could find the readers pre-built, its been years since i did any electronics work. I'll probably be really cabbage and use IC sockets etc cuz I'll kill them with heat otherwise :D

The kit comes with IC sockets, also quite a big board so you don;t need to be 100% with ya iron room for forgiveness. The stream you would be watching in Media Centre etc will be recorded as Media Portal TV Server and Media Centre XP / Vista both Timeslip by nature so you are actually watching recorded TV all the time not live. There is a 2sec lag.
