Am I imagining it, but has the 55" Veon gone up $100? I was positive it had been $600 but it's now $700. The 55" is now $600...

Hi, thinking of springing for a 65. PBtech have new Panasonic for $1500. Mixed reviews. There's a Sony for $1700 at a few places. Again, fairly mixed reviews. The LGs review the best, and again, with Queen's B day they're in the $1800 range.

Veyons on the other hand, are under a grand. So I'm tempted.

Question; they seem to come in flavours that vary. VPS65UHD for $1400, SRO6544k2016-P for $1200 and one that doesn't even have a model number for a mere $900.

What's the difference?

If it's the 'smarts' I reckon it's not worth the extra pingas. Nothing smart will stay that way for long, it's changing too quickly and even the big boys don't seem to have very consistent app stores etc. Personally, I just want a decent monitor. As people have said here, that switches on when another device - eg Apple TV or Chromecast switch on.

For $200 or so, and much better app support, I'd rather use those and just have a dumb (but decent quality) screen.

TV makers should stick to their knitting. Make screens, leave apps to someone else.

Anyway, I'm thinking I'll probably use PLEX for movies and music. Sound-wise, a budget receiver - there are a few around for $500 or less. I have good speakers already, may as well use them.

Any thoughts?

Oh and it'll be in a darkened AV room if that makes a difference. On the wall.

My guess is that’s why they’re going cheap and why it’s a pre-order online gig. You can’t see how bad they are. Main gripe seems to be picture quality and only 1 proper HDMI port. Poor 4K processing. That wasn’t just one person either. Lots.

In my experience, the best way to sell a Philips TV is to not have the panel turned on near any other TV's - that way comparisons aren't possible.

Just my experience though.

Yeap. That’s what I’m thinking. At least with Veon you go in with fairly low expectations. If it’s not great, well you got what you paid for. If it IS great, you’ve got a bargain - 1/2 the price of the big brand’s.

Dunno, unless someone can knock a few more dollars off the Sony...

The basic LGs have that snazzy remote too. Maybe I’ll wait a little longer.

Not all LGs have that remote, and its quite a curse for me on mine. Power on and off is done only over IR, and its output is close to useless so you have to aim it at the TV to turn on and off. Perhaps they have sorted that in the 2016 and later ones.

And it chews batteries like crazy and lags out all the time and gets messages on the screen about interference.

I'll answer my own question. Yep, the Warehouse staff confirm that the prices have gone up; they said they were new models with different SCUs. I did notice the floor model has a matte bezel whereas the one there last week (for $100 less) had the shiny one.

Staff were unable to tell me off any differences between the new and old models, so interested to know if anyone else has any knowledge on this...

Finally found a Warehouse where I could view. 65 did NOT look good. Source probably wasn’t 4K but even 1080 should’ve looked better. According to the salesperson they used to be Samsung panels, but no more. He couldn’t say where the panels were from but reckoned to get the price lower they were coming from all over - and quality was reflected in price. The low price one - 899, is very low quality.

So is this really a simple case of you get what you pay for?

Also checked out the Sony. $1699 at Noels. 65”. Looked OK, obviously not OLED quality. And the motion handling was bad. You could see it in the rolling credits. Jerky. Compared to other 65s using same source.

Wonder if that’s a setting somewhere. That Sony is supposed to have image processing and smoothing.

Still debating but the 65” 4K 2017 model Sony is winning. Despite jerky credits. Who watches those anyway?

Help me before the indecision drives me mad!

The jerky credits problem is often that they have a 24fps bluray, but the player is outputting 60hz because they have a HDMI splitter that just shows as 60 for compatibility. Not all displays un mess it up as well as each other.

Or someone has gone and disabled all the motion options because some pretentious movie-buff website says to do that to get rid of the "soap opera" effect they so despise.

Is it just me or everything on TV overload the blue? When something is nice and colourful the Veon 49" is pretty good but if there's some blue overload... For example Dance with the Stars - their set is atrocious ugly and blue all the way.

Anyone got some "recipes" for good movie settings we can use?

Dude that stuff is real man. Makes me want to puke. It's like someone made a setting that mimics chucking back a bag of magic mushrooms beforehand, and then sold it as looking better...

Well it makes things look like they are moving rather than a series of still images, so I have it on. I cant stand it off particually when there is anything scrolling and panning.

When entertainment media catch up with gaming PCs and offer 120+ Hz then it can be turned off. Till then made up frames are better than chug chug chug everytime something onscreen larger than someones lips are moving.
