Fair enough. I may add the hardware when it becomes available, but my existing Oppo 93 is already region-free and I only have a handful of A and B Blu-ray discs these days, so I'm in no rush.

I have heard that hardware mod can be defeated by firmware update. I will go another route as suggested by AV World
I think someone is leading you down the garden path. The whole point of a physical mod is that they can't be defeated with firmware changes.
I am too looking for a 4K BR player and at the moment the options in NZ are:
xbox one S $ 379.00
Panasonic DMP-UB900GNK $ 884.00
Samsung UBD-K8500/XY $ 569.00
OPPO UDP-203 $1049.00
OPPO UDP-203 (Region Free) $1599.00
The Xbox One is out due to the non ATMOS and bitstreaming Support and the extra $550 is pretty expensive for a hardware change which is probably a jumper cut for the Region Free OPPO.
Is the OPPO output/features really worth the High Price?
Or shall I wait for CES when other people will announce new hardware ?
Also to Note: I have a 2014 Onkyo NR838 (as far as I know it was the first one sold in NZ as I got it the day Avalon the distributors got it in Store ) and looking to upgrading that as well if anyone is interested.

SO bitstreaming and atmos will be support / already supported if you have Xbox Insider Hub Support..
Yeah so value for money I think is xbox one S, depending on how many things your looking to plug into it
It should propagate out to the rest of the line of consoles some time soon, so for anyone still on the fence, it seems the Xbox One S is now the 4K Blu-Ray player to have.
Edit: And in my distraction someone else beat me to mentioning it. Welp.

Anything I say is the ramblings of an ill informed, opinionated so-and-so, and not representative of any of my past, present or future employers, and is also probably best disregarded.
The region-free modification chip for the Oppo 203 is only US$89 (bluraychip) or US$99 (JVB) and installs easily without any soldering: just a cable swap. Anyone charging an extra $500 for it is bonkers.
That is the price on Pricespy listed for Rapallo having it as.
http://pricespy.co.nz/product.php?p=4060658
But when you go to the Link http://www.rapalloav.co.nz/oppo-udp-203au-uhd-blu-ray-disc-player-region-free.html
Its stated as call for price.
Anyone know what they are actually going to sell it for?
Also Anyone have an invite for the Insider Program???

Dunno where I got the price for the Xbox One S but that the AU Price :-) NZ Cheapest price was.. $448 for a 500G Version
jeeg:
Now that amazon is already shipping 4K Blu Rays (Martian and Madmax comes into mind).
When are we going to get them locally in NZ?
I'm having trouble getting excited by 2D ultra hi-res TV.
I'd have to spend several thousand dollars and it can't play any of my 80-odd 3D blu-rays.
Pointless.....

Here's a new one from Panasonic DMP-UB400 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player
Supposed to be 8K ready as well.
