Linuxluver:

I'm having trouble getting excited by 2D ultra hi-res TV.

I'd have to spend several thousand dollars and it can't play any of my 80-odd 3D blu-rays.

Yeah, that fad ship looks to have sailed.  Might make a come back once 4K TV's have settled down a bit, and they need a filler before 8K etc...

Here's a new one from Panasonic DMP-UB400 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player

Supposed to be 8K ready as well.

It isn't, guaranteed.

Yup - they have only JUST announced HDMI 2.1 as a standard, so the players won't be compatible.

Not that it will stop Panasonic's brand managers talking about it...

Does anybody have a recommendation for a source of disks with reasonable shipping costs to NZ?

I'll answer my own, frankly stupid, question. I'm going with E-Bay for the purchase, and am using ship2u for the shipping. Ship2u have an awful user interface, but they work well, are cheap, and are nice to deal with. Shipping should be about $8.50 NZ. I think.

For the sake of completeness I feel the need to advise that ship2u actually charged me a whole nzd $6 for shipping the uhd disk from the USA to Auckland.

I bought the (Arrival) uhd for nzd 25 on ebay.

All in all I am pleased. Next time I'll get more disks to drop the shipping cost further.

I have made the same mistake before only buying one disc at a time.

Just snaffled the Panasonic DMP-UB900, $679 from Noels until April 4th with Mad Max and Creed. I don't have a 4k display but I'll bet it'll still look mighty impressive through my Epson EH-TW8300 projector.

Great price for the UB900. Im very happy with mine and wont be upgrading anytime soon. No Dolby vision but my TV doesnt support it anyway. Little rant regards UHD Titles in NZ. Where are they? Wheres Hacksaw Ridge and a few other titles. I was hoping we would get them on a simultaneous release with their Blu-ray DVD counterparts but thats usually not the case if at all eg Hacksaw Ridge,The Arrival,Deepwater horizon etc. Was hoping to buy local as the JB $39.99 price isnt too bad. Will have to start bringing them in from Amazon etc. Supposedly there are quite a few titles being released this year...the local distributors have to pick up their game.

No starwars on it. Was wanting to get the new one in 4k. If I am going to buy media, its not going to be an inferior format just because they choose not to release it. If a 1080 bluray is the best they release than a torrent will sort me out for that.

Yup,we are still waiting for Disney to jump in,so that would include Marvel Stuff as well. I think Fox still owns the distribution rights to all the first 6 Star Wars films so im not sure how that would works out with Disney in the frey?

Against the current $367 for an xbox one S with forza horizon 3 I do not see that as being very good value.

TBH, a player only machine like that should be closer to $200 to be worth considering. If it was also a DVB-T box and PVR and other things, then perhaps a $500 price is worthwhile. Otherwise to quote the castle, tell em hes dreaming.
