There is a detailed tutorial available to get the XMBC on Raspberry Pi on this website.

I followed the above instruction and got my Raspberry Pi setup with XMBC. RaspberryPi plays mostly all the video format except the H.263 format due to some licensing cost.

For those wondering about the USB external HDD. Yes, I can play files from my 1TB (NTFS) drive to Rapberry Pi ;).

just got my modmypi case, and i have to say im a little disappointed. everyone on the net were raving about them, saying how awesome they were.

the pi isnt super snug, it can shake a bit in the case (not much but still), and theres a imperfection on both parts where it looks like the plastic was injected or something.

its a good case, and worth the money but doesnt live up to the "OMG this is awesome" rep its been getting.

My Raspberry Pi turned up on Thursday. I plugged everything in, used raspbmc-win32 to write an image, containing XBMC, to a Micro SD card in an adaptor, and pugged in the power USB. Half a dozen or so lines of text flash down the screen then "error -84 initilising sd card". This error can mean an incompatible SD card ... or other problem.
I then downloaded 2012-07-15-wheezy-raspbian, and put that on my card. With that image I get about 50 lines of text on the screen, but can't read any of it - it just reboots.
I've now tried a total three micro SD cards. Same results on each image and card.

Anyone able to suggest a cause / solution please? I wonder if someone in Wellington has a working Pi, and would be happy for me to bring mine to them, to try a working SD card without having to buy one, until I know that is the problem.

Finally got around to firing mine up, using the latest RaspbMC build on a 32gb Apacer class 10 SD card. Worked like a charm, a 720p MKV file I tested played flawlessly!

A couple of minor niggles - so far haven't been able to get a MCE remote working with it - have selected 'Remote sends keypresses' as per the FAQ, but still doesn't work - gets random keypresses from the remote, and the 'OK' button doesn't do anything. Config file for that might need tweaking... Also it seems to fail to boot if the screen I've got it connected to isn't powered on first.

SteveC - I also see a couple of lines with the -84 error initially, but after a few seconds it seems to sort itself out and continue booting.

I have ordered a rPI e14 said they have 200 ib stock. So I hope it will be here in a couple of weeks.

Wanted a Nexus7 but I have to eat Pi. Still good.

I got this card from Ascent "A-Data SDHC Card, 16 GB, 100X, Class 10".
Seems to be working OK, but will need a bit of research to get RaspMC doing anything useful.

so are any of you folks using usb wifi dongles?
If so - what make/models and are they working ok????

I have ordered a pi and have a few weeks to wait. Got my sd card and am sorting out a USB wall charger that should sort the power supply - so just need to work out the networking. Dont want it to arrive and to find I cant play with it straight away!!

I am thinking of raspbmc to start with.

I am using a cheapo transcend micro sd in an adapter with raspbmc. I got the same error message for the first couple of times and also when it actually booted it froze up. I was powering it fom the usb on the tv. When I used a proper usb mains adapter (5V @ 1A) it went fine.

I forgot about that - I did get my Pi going better with my 2 gig cards after changing the power supply, but RaspbMC still hung. New SD card (ref two or three posts ago) seems to run it OK - still some error messages though.

The EDIMAX-802.11n-150Mbps - NETEDI7811 is on the list. http://elinux.org/RPi_VerifiedPeripherals#Working_USB_Wifi_Adapters So should ne be totally impossible.

i'm using an EDUP-EPN8508 and managed to get it working in raspbmc. I got this from trademe for around $10 i think..

though streaming was really laggy and i remembered that my router is still wireless G.

Looks like RC4 of RaspbMC is out - from my read of the description it looks like this update will resolve a whole pile of issues. Also is apparently WIFI ready out of the box (assuming your adapter has one of the supported chipsets). Appears that a re-install is required - doesn't look like they have a working updater at this point.

Typical this gets released the day after I get mine going with RC3!

If you want the fastest version of XBMC on the Pi, try the Xbian release.

I have tried Openelce and Raspbmc but Xbian is definitely the best. www.xbian.org

No problems playing NZ 1080p NZ terrestrial TV recordings.

I have skimmed over this forum, and a couple of websites.

Does the pi have digital audio out? Or does it only do digital audio over HDMI?

I am erally keen for an XBMC device, but I need optical or coax digital audio (my HT audio system has no HDMI inputs and I will not be changing it).

Failing that, is ther a device that takes HDMI in and splits the audio out (ie, HDMI in, Coax/Optical and HDMI out)?

the pi only has analog audio out and audio over HDMI. there is no optical output.

however there is talks about adding support for USB audio device, which you would be able to use. people mostly want the USB audio devices to add support for DTS in hardware since that requires a lot of CPU power to decode.
