hmm, I went to Magnessbenrow @ greenlane and saw these two tvs next to each other, (Rear Projection and LCD)
and LCD just looks amazing in color and viewing angel. Where the projection you have to sit straight in front of the TV in order to see anything clear. LCD is obviouly much brighter than rear projection.

Anyway, I got the 46'' XBR2 because of the above reasons, I know rear projection has a much bigger screen, but if you have to watch it from a far distance because of the horrible viewing angel thats just not good enough.

Question, when you were looking at the rear pro. Were you looking at it from viewing height? i.e. Were you at the same level. The new rear pros get fairly good viewing side to side but they cannot handle looking down at them which is often how they are presented in shops. I have one and i can tell you that it is plenty bright enough (i have the brightness at 50 out of 100). Our lounge is in bright sun a good part of the day and we have no problems with the brightness of the rear pro or side to side viewing angles.

ive just been thru a fair amount of research comparing the 50inch SXRD (rear projection) with the 46inch X Series Bravia and ended up buying the Bravia (delivered tomorrow - woohar!). I spent hours trawling thru forums, one in particular where some clearly very switched on geezers were participating. On paper the SXRD promised much more than the XSeries, of particular interest to me was the 2ms response time and high contrast.

But ultimately my eyes showed something very different. I took my women in to check the SXRD out (knowing she would just love the size of it... or not) and side by side the XSeries owned. Sure initially the XSeries was playing the "bluff the fools" HD material but once we hooked them both up to sky (ugly on both!) the xseries was still a clear winner for my interpretation of a good picture.

What most freaked me out was the viewing angle issues of the SXRD. the vertical axis is a known thing, the pros say if your not sitting at eye-level then your wasting your time, but the horizontal was also crap. Over the many hours i spent in the forums I read about the sets being setup crap and positioned crap by idiot salesman, which could be true... but it seemed to me unless you have a dedicated viewing room with a chair stuck in the absolute sweetpoint then the LCD option is probably the go...

you can check the SXRD out at the newmarket sony store, its setup in a nice dark environment and does look pretty good from front on, but that was my first viewing and I did not pay attention to the view angles at the time. what sucks about that store is they have no tv source (sky or otherwise) to compare against the super HD shizzle.

cheers

This seems to be a common problem. Personally I'd walk away from a sale if I they couldn't show me a TV plugged into an SD analogue source. The bigger the TV gets the worse the picture so it's understanable why they won't want to show you or have it running instore.

Interesting. Most of the stores around here show SDTV on their HDTV sets, either from Sky or a DVD. There are of course a few sets with the obligatory HD image from their image generators and of course for the Panasonic BluRay the BluRay demo disc. One store was showing a DVD on the 60" SXRD with a composite video connection! Needless to say it didn't look that good.

As for the Bravia versus SXRD, I looked closely at the 50"Bravia (is that the 1080p model) versus both the 50" and 60" SXRD and I would choose the SXRD anyday. Picture is brighter, there are no pixels to be seen (on the Bravia can still the screen door effect) and much better value.

My views anyway

With LCD TV like Bravia X,  you can manage to get a pixel to pixel quanlity from a HD+HDMI setup. I wouldnt say "seeing pixels" is a bad thing.

Larrys comments echo much of what I read on the AVForums from those that sounded (and probably are) very experienced. I guess because i dont follow the guidelines that suggest i should sit 1.5 times the screensize away from my TV I dont find the visible pixels issue very troublesome. And again it may well have been the setup, but to my eye the LCD was plenty bright.

whatever. if your spending 6-8k on a TV, best you do your own research and make sure your happy before taking the plunge.

If I were buying a new set (which I must admit I am considering given the amount of trouble the JVC D-ILA has given me), I would look very hard at the 60" Sony SXRD. I wish however that JVC were importing their new 1080P D-ILA sets with the iris but they seem to be only available in the US at the moment.

My trouble with the JVC hasn't been PQ - it's been an ongoing problem with the HDMI input fed from a PC. It finally worked yesterday after a tech replaced a whole module in the set. And after one day it failed!  Not only will it not display an image from my Nvidia card over DVI but it won't even display an image from my Samsung upconverting DVD player over DVI :-(
