timbosan: Which HN was that? I would like to see it in person!

Maribyrnong in Melbourne. Not sure if any of the NZ stores would have one. AU$17,999

I think I saw it in HN on Tory Street. $25K so there is a bit of a markup from Aus to here.

Staying in Wellington. Check out my AirBnB in the Wellington CBD.  https://www.airbnb.co.nz/h/wellycbd  PM me and mention GZ to get a 15% discount and no AirBnB charges.

mrphil: would a 4k movie fit onto a bluray? or will there be a new format coming out for 4k movies?

i would think streaming a 4k movie would be a huge amount of data

Blurry standard allows for up to 8 25GB layers, so there would be room. Although i imagine you would need a new player etc. I could imagine the read speed of a blu ray drive may not keep up if it was so many layers?

There's a new video codec (I've forgotten the name of it) that can supposedly do 2k in half the bitrate of H.264. Extrapolating that, if you can currently store a 2k movie in 30 GB using the existing codec then you'd be able to store a 4k movie in 60 GB with the new codec. So just add another layer (probably two for future-proofing) and you're set.

In any case you'll still need a new player.

guess there is going to be a flood of new players coming out with the new tv's

The LG and Sony's apparently share the same screen, however the LG is 10k cheaper here.
I've seen it playing 4k via a computer, Freeview UHF and a streamed DVD rip - and the up-scaling was surprisingly good!
I think it's exclusive to the Harvey Norman chain, whereas the Sony 4k TV is only available in Sony Style stores at this point.

Just seen a post about LG's 4K 30" monitors.  That would be AWESOME.  Funnily enough only 150~ DPI, so half the density of a 'retina' display.

Wired reckon you should save your money - they do look pretty, but between lack of content, and scary price, you're better off not paying the early-adopter tax.

Thought Sony confirmed the PS3 can play 4k?

I only went to 1080 in 2012, I can't see myself wanting to change to this for years to come.

Be interesting to see one in action however.

No not really, it is called the exchange rate, and Australias GST rate is lower, so the price is very similar. Also there are additional costs selling in NZ, including having to retain spare parts, transport, and also NZ has a smaller market.

Saw a 4K set in Wellington Sony style, and the picture was pretty darn amazing. However, the cost was stratospheric and, other than the 10 minute demo loop running off a server, they advised there was no actual 4K content available yet. They do, apparently, have a blu-ray player that will upscale 1080P material to 4K.

A long time before pricing and content availability will make 4K sensible for the masses methinks.

At this point I would already consider it far more sensible than the fad that has been 3D.

Well yes, but that's not exactly a difficult test. I am amazed how well the marketers had managed to push that one!

I still remember when people were calling blu-ray a fad.

Well I was happy no matter who won and I had backed HD-DVD, but Blu-Ray won and I love it. MS had to go and sulk and removed HD optical drives from their systems so they could deliver online which was typically stupid of MS. How many Multibillion dollar companies sulk!?
