Measure twice, cut once. I just bought some 14AWG off TM and ended up a tad short. Forgot to factor in enough slack to pull the receiver out the AV unit and attach them :(

Ive also started thinking about subwoofer position. Was thinking by tv or behind settee.

people say to try it but that means buying two cables (or 1 that is very long!)

Make your own with a length of RG59 coax and some RCA plugs.

Thanks jaxson will look into that.

I've just measured and think I need 26 meters. Tried making allowances for height from receiver etc.

Bad news is can't run cable under carpet as stapled down.

There is a hole from one side of room to another (under house), don't think it's big enough for speaker cables.

Do you think the landlord would mind if I made it a tad bigger???

Oh, it's a rental...
Might want to look at surface runs in that case, so you can take it all with you easily if/when you move.

Yeah that's another problem Im going to have to face.

I could possibly run it along the floor edge without it being too noticeable. Will have to re-measure.

Now comes the decision of Oxygen Free cable or not. The flexibility of it would be useful but not not sure if it warrants 3x the price!?

Have a look at the website listed by Dunnersfella earlier in this thread http://www.roger-russell.com/wire/wire.htm - you may decide that Oxygen-free Copper wire just isn't worth the price. There's a lot of other useful cable information there too.

I did see that site, very imformative! I also read through several forums debating the issue.

Pros: More fleixble, will have a longer life than normal speaker cable

Cons: A lot more money!!!

Hmmmm, I'm still leaning towards the 12AWG from Blue jeans cable.

Will consult with the oracle that is my dad and see what he has to say about it.

Ok one decision made. . .

Oxygen free cable is going out of the window.

Been looking at some listings on trademe, but I am slightly wary as to the actual size and quality etc.

I'd just peel back the carpet and pop a hole in the floor just next to the wall. The carpet will hide it when it's down. If the holes are visible it's probably not cool!

Look closely below where you intend to drill! Safety first... Don't hit the power or gas or water pipes.

PS: if your house is a listed historic building or the floor boards are awesome, you might want to ignore my advice and not drill at all.

Yes the very sensible advice would be to discuss this with your landlord first, but typically the answer would be no. As above, it's very easy to do this in a way that won't be obvious once you remove it all, even drilling through the carpet directly will be hard to spot when the cables are removed later on. Some houses are more suited to a rough and ready approach than others. Concrete floors don't respond well to drilling holes through them for instance...

There is an exisiting hole for the freeview aerial. Not sure if its big enough for 2 lots of speaker cable tho.

If its not, then I guess there is no harm is asking to make the hole a tad bigger.

If not, then I'll just run the cable around the wall. It wont look that great but better than losing my bond money!

Anyone bought speaker cable from trademe and been pleased with it?

That is interesting to know. I did read one post where someone said it was a marketing scam, but I just want to be sure.
No point in spending all this money on receiver and speakers and still have poor audio.

hey dude, sorry to go way off topic, but i notice you listed the TX-NR515 receiver and am after your experiences with it.

Have you found any issues with the device coming out of standby? On the AVS forums, there has been lots of people complaining that the HDMI does no re-initialize when the device comes out of standby.

Onkyo have promised firmware fixes, but i can find little on if this fixed the issue or not.

I not that some users have noted that turning off the LAN Standby feature seems to stop the issue.

Lets say you do make the hole bigger in this rented property, do you also need to pay attention to correctly sealing the gaps around the cables through this hole using appropriate fire stopping materials?
Will your landord get unfairly pinged / rejected by their insurance company if something were ever to happen (water/fire damage) ? Would the landlord then come running to you with lawyers in tow to seek recompense?

This is the cable I bought off TM for our first HT setup (speakers are nothing flash - just the KEF 2000 series ('egg' speakers), and I think it's fine for it's purpose -

Richard ("Jaxson" on this forum) installed it for me, and as far as 50m for around $100, I think it was good value. As I mentioned, finding bigger diameter cable (at an affordable price) on TM was a bit difficult this time around, hence me ordering from Blue Jeans.

Have you noticed a difference between the 12 and 14?

I am contemplating between buying from 12AWG from BJC and 14awg from trademe etc.
