In the end, I ended up buying a HP MCE remote. The main functions work out of the box and to get some added functions, i just followed the instructions on this site. :D

I'm always on the hunt for the perfect HTPC remote and I think I just about found one.

http://www.oneforall.co.uk/en_UK/product/377/simple-4

Run down:

It's a pretty close look and feel to the original one MCE remote. A bit bigger.

I think it has some basic macro functionality but I don't use that because I do all my automation from the HTPC over HDMI CEC.

The fact that it is universal is really important to me because I control the volume and DSP settings on my Amp.

It has a kind of neat feature that it lights up when you touch it.

It feels really solid and well built.

it has usb/online configuration but it's pretty useless. In the end programming on the remote it self and learning is really the best option and even that can be kind of fiddly.

It doesn't learn MCE commands properly and you have to turn de-bounce off in the windows registry for it to work but that hasn't had any negative effects. (I've got a support call in with one-for-all for this issue)

I bought it at the Warehouse for $60. A bit expensive but it's pretty good.

Oh and I use it with an original MCE receiver.
