richms: You might find that in interlaced mode its actually outputting rgb for a scart or something, so there could be a menu option you need to change. Mates dvd player does that after he flashed it with a dodgey firmware to enable user controls, no interlaced component anymore. Known issue with that one but the later ones break something else on it so he puts up with it.

I read the manual! It seems that the component video inputs on my set will only accept 480p 576p 720p 1080i 1125i so when I tried to feed it 576i which is the setting I need to get svideo and composite video to display, the set didn't like it. Luckily the STB can output 576p which looks pretty good based on what TV1 widescreen are showing now though I am getting tired of the same two episodes of Stargate SG1 they are showing!

regarding rugbywc in widescreen, and other shows, surely it has to depend on the native recording? eg for shows filmed in 4:3, surely you can't "make" them widescreen without distortion or loss of quality or even loss of portions of the screen such that the heads of the locks are "cut off" eg?? hmmm ... but it's good it's good.... for a start. hopefully hd will arrive soon...

Sky record all NZ rugby in WS however only broadcast WS on the rugby channel. The Sky Sport feed is a 16:9 feed converted to 4:3 for broadcast.

The French are well ahead of us, unfortunately. They will be shooting the RWC2007 in High Definition, so therefore it will be widescreen (all HD formats are 16:9). In fact, if you don't have a WS TV you'll be missing out because presumably if it's viewed on a 4:3 TV, it'll be cropped.

Hi

When I left the UK 5 years ago, most of the Free to Air channels were already in Widescreen and most shows also were in 16x9 widescreen. that includes UK an US, all sports shown on Skysports 1-3 were widescreen and that includes rugby from France and the rest of Europe. So when TVNZ and Canwest go widescreen, most all overseas shows will be in 16x9. If they are not that is because the TV station has not gone digital and are still receiving tapes of the shows, Sky and Canwest have total digital systems, I am not sure about TVNZ, maybe that is why they are behind.

I notice that Nat Geo on Sky is 16:9 now, dunno when it happend. You will now find that all material from Europe/UK is 16:9, the BBC will not accept 4:3 material unless they are showing old programming.

I get TCL and unfortunately it seems they squash the 16:9 Nat Geo signal and rebroadcast it as 4:3. Or have I set up my TCL STB and TV wrong???

Discovery would have made more sense to make wide screen since even the old episodes of American Chopper they are showing are actually 16:9. I couldn't even name any shows on national geographic ;)

It doesn't seem so, but I hope TV3 is like the Rugby Channel, where it is smart enough for those with a 4:3 TV to put borders top and bottom for 16:9 WS, then fill the whole screen for 4:3 broadcasts (you can set all this stuff in the STB options).

As for French broadcasters, they are rushing a bit. Though the WC will be in 16:9 HD, it is only a recent innovation to broadcast rugby in widescreen. As some may recall for last years end of year tour game 1, the host broadcaster (TF1 I assume) only recorded this game in 4:3, hence it being in that, even on The Rugby Channel. The U19 Rugby World Cup starts this weekend, will be intersting to see if that's in 16:9 (is being shown on TV3)

Now if Sky would pull finger and set up their other sports channels to show widescreen properly.

TV3 will be (almost) exactly like the Rugby Channel, for SKY Digital and TCL Digital viewers. For those same viewers who have 4:3 sets, they are recommending you set your STB to centre-cut. My understanding is that most widescreen sports broadcasts are 4:3 action- and graphic- safe; then when broadcasters crop them to 4:3, pictures will still make sense.

Where they differ: Rugby Channel transmits 4:3 commercials stretched to fill the 16:9 screen. (Why? SKY think they are doing us all a favour. They are not.) TV3 will not be doing this. But if 4:3 viewers set their STBs to letterbox, any letterboxed material (ie 4:3 material with 16:9 letterboxing) will be postage-stamped. This is why tehy recommend centre-cut for 4:3 displays.

What do you have your STB and TV set for?

Well, the TelstraClear STB is set to 16:9 aspect ratio. I had my TV's "Wide" mode set to "Normal" which shows black bars on left and right and all the people are "skinny". When I put it in "Full" mode, it streches it to fill the screen and people look normal.

I would have thought that "Normal" mode would show it as the picture has been broadcast, but I think I've misunderstood it. Maybe I just need to have it on "Full" for 16:9 broadcasts?

BTW, I have a Sony KLV-S26A10 LCD.

hi jon, well depends on the signal setup. 16:9 will always be 16:9 no matter what - 2 ways of doing it - you can setup the signal to be "normal", ie 4:3, and if you have 4:3 tv, you will see normal people in the middle of a panaromic type picture but with blackness top and bottom. if you set it to this signal and you had a wide tv you can zoom in and hey presto the picture fills up the screen. but you lose resolution (quality).

so, unfortunately when you select the other kind of signal, the "widescreen" one, it sends the 16:9 shrunken in 4:3 format. you have to stretch it by using "full" (just of note, it will look incredibly funny-mirrored if you accidentally had it in "wide" mode!) to get 16:9. there's no other way. (also of note if you chose this signal and had a 4:3 tv the people will look very skinny). hope this helps!

At the moment, my STB is set to letterboxed 4:3. Despite your claims, i have found that the Rugby Channel graphics for some games will be cut off when in 4:3 centre cut. This is the case particularly with UK sourced games. Besides, I like the extra bit on the side. Presently the Rugby Channel will broadcast 4:3 shows in full screen, even if you have it set to letterbox.

I take it what you mean TV3 will do the same as National Geographic (I can confirm that's in WS now too) where 4:3 footage is broadcast in letterbox, with side borders. When I put it into centre cut, it looks 'normal' as it did before.
