grolschie: Cheers guys. I've been waiting for the Blu-Ray of this movie and resisted buying the DVD. Hopefully it will be available in NZ soon. The one on Amazon says Region A/1, but Blu-Ray.com says regions "A,B (C untested)". :-/

If this is all that is holding you back, just get a zone-selectable blu-ray player. The big name brands don't typically do this, but there are quite a few off-brand models available for around $100 that cope with Region A disks. I have two (a Toshiba in the main room and one of the warehouse Veons that I got on sale for $50 in the spare room).

Models here that I know for certain are region free are the Veon model VN2916BR-DVD and the Toshiba BDX1200. In both cases press press SETUP, then 8520 on the remote to bring up a selection menu. The Toshiba may need a firmware update (mine didn't) to the right "ky" aussie formware to get region-free capability.

I have also heard, but haven't tested, that the Toshiba BDX3200 and the Soniq B100 work this way as well.

Well worth doing if you are a file buff, even if you already have a BR player. They are dirt cheap and the US title range, release window and pricing can be pretty attractive compared to the NZ offering.

I think it just depends on whether they think it is a viable option. Once Were Warriors was the first NZ movie on blu-ray I remember seeing but oddly enough the second was Black Sheep. Also some other lesser known films on blu-ray are Sione's 2, The Devil's Rock and Eagle vs Shark. So it's definitely possible Mt Zion might make it to blu-ray.

I'm wondering why is "Boy" available via Amazon on Blu-Ray but I haven't seen any sources in NZ?

NZ distributors have confirmed that Boy will not be released on Blu Ray in New Zealand. The only way to get Boy on blu ray is to purchase from the US. Amazon definitely have it. It has been confirmed that Boy will play on Region B blu ray players.

DTS HD MA and Dolby TrueHD use lossless compression, they are not uncompressed !

Getting pretty OT now...

You start getting into the realms of audiophileness, it'd likely be those (think they) can hear the difference between DTS and DTS-HD in a 5.1 scenario who are likely to have a high-end enough setup to be able to notice the actual difference, those with a sub $5000 receiver and speaker setup would be hard put to tell the difference unless they're in a much better-than-average acoustic environment (i.e. not the average NZ lounge). I've got an (I believe) better than average setup with a mid-range ($1500ish) Onkyo receiver and a KEF 5.1 speaker set ($1200ish) and I could do double-blind tests all day in my lounge and not be able to tell you what was what unless I was concentrating so hard that I would no longer be able to enjoy the movie.

Obviously, if you've got a well soundproofed lounge and a high-end setup, then more power to ya, and can I bring the popcorn?

DTS HD MA supports lossless, it doesn't guarantee that it's always provided in lossless form.

If you can't hear the difference it's time to sell your KEF's and Onkyo.
To me, the difference is night and day... you're the first I've heard to say the difference is insignificant.

I have an Onkyo tx-nr717 and wharfedale diamonds (not exactly high end) and the difference between DD and TrueHD/DTS-master is very clear.

Have you properly tested this? I doubt you could accurately tell the difference if you didn't now what was playing.

BDX3200KY definitely does; I have one.

So does the Laser Blu ray player, model numbers: BD1080/BD1000.

Most of these players are from the same factory, or at least have very similar hardware and firmware. Very cheap, region-selectable, some still have 5.1 analogue outputs which is a nice relic in this day and age of HDMI-only.

1080p: Complaints about film piracy hurting industry here fall on deaf ears if no effort is put into making copies of the work that people actually want to buy...

No one wants to watch a DVD on their 50" plasma TV.

Who wants physical media like a Blue ray either?

Way cheaper for the copyright owner to release a HD online stream or download... you won't see it happen from the dinosaur's in the film industry though.

A LOAD of times, swapping between sound tracks is simple, an SPL meter makes volume levels easy to sort too. :-)
To be fair, I tend not to listen on $2k systems if I can help it... but the difference is NOT small. If you have two audio formats available to you, why not choose the highest quality one your gear can produce? The only reason not to, is because some people struggle to understand how to switch to the correct format... or, they've got gear/media that's not capable of reproducing it.
