RobDickinson: I think its madness they've not been advertising it since xmas realy - how much would it cost TV companies to put in a few adverts now and again?

Sky have been pushing hard recently and tying people into lengthy contracts with juct get in offers, all those people are now lost customers for quite some time.

Freeview and Sky aren't competing products so that's a moot point.

After reading a few other posts in this thread I gthink people forget that Freeview isn't some fancy PPV service, it's the first step towards replacing NZ's analogue broadcast channels with DVB-S and DVB-T replacements.

IMHO there's no point in wasting money advertising that Freeview is coming soon because 99% of people simply wouldn't care. Once the service is up and running there will be an advertising campaign to advertise the fact. IMHO Freeview isn't really going to take off until DVB-T is available next February.

Yeah I agree. It's to be phased in over a years to replace analogue, people will get there eventually. And when people realise that other FREE stuff will be offered they may buy the box. I suspect Stations may plug it like they do their websites. But no one is losing in the short term. It'll iron itself out.

was in Dick Smith yesterday, they had a handful of brochures with basic info re Freeview, was even with the TV's :)

Freeview for me is a bit of a waste of time, as i am already a Sky Digital subscriber, when DVB-T is out, then i'll be happier :)

Slightly OT but I see Sky have started a new advertising campaign today. $49 gets you Sky reinstalled if you already have an existing dish on your roof.

Again slight OT but did anybody notice the TV1 widescreen was showing segments illustrating different AR's

They were showing a segment from Oceans' 12 in various formats including

1. 2.25:1 (they said 22:9) displayed at anamorphic 16:9 (I prefer this) so there is still some letterboxing
2. 2:25:1 zoomed to 16:9 full (with the credits some text was cut off on the left)

Then some local TV shown as

1. full screen stretched
2. Pillarboxed (black bars on the side)
3.  Not sure what this is but black bars on all side
4: 14:9 text safe

Interesting. Maybe they are also preparing for WS on Freeview?

Hmm....Gave up on NZ broadcasters a while back over a) no component on Sky digiboxes and b) no DVB, now I see both are around. Time to get my DVB-T HD STB over from Aus, although Feb launch is a long way away. Also time to get a Scart -> COmponent cable.

A quick Q, as I haven't kept up with it - What will be the benefit of FTV DVB-S over the FTV channels broadcast by Sky?

Two benefits:

1)  WS FTA channels (TV3/C4 initially then TVNZ from 31st July) are appearing on FreeView sooner than Sky.

2)  You don't need a Sky Subscription in order to view exactly the same FTA content, yet with better (WS) quality through FreeView (at least initially).

fcollingwood, dont bother bringing your DVB-T STB across from Aus, it wont work as when released here it will be mpeg4. The only benifit you will have from it is the rock you use to keep the kitchen door open can return to the garden, and be replaced by your DVB-T mpeg2 STB.

The main advantage that the FreeView DVB-S (DTH) service has over Sky's is that is cost no more. Sky will have TV1/2 in Widescreen at the same time as FreeView as with TV3.

I suspect that once FreeView is offically launched next Wednesday Sky will either immediately or soon shut down there own streams of TV1/2/3/C4 and MaoriTV and just point subscribers to the Freeview service, therefore the same picture quality will apply to both services. Therefore only leaving subscription cost an issue.

It would be a bummer if that happens Frown

We would no longer be able to record programmes from TV1/2/3 on MySky...

Is that what you meant Cyril?
