Just had a quote to put our hdmi cable into the walls of our house and will cost $1000 - $1500, now looking into a possible wireless solution. Looks like the Belkin Screencast doesn't really work, anyone got any other solutions? Can spend a bit more on solution as still cheaper then putting into the wall....

How did they come up with that price?!

Do you have $200 a roll wallpaper that will need redoing or something?

On a concrete slab with no room in the roof, very labour intensive work. Had two quotes now and both similar range....

My experience is that streaming video over wireless N at decent bitrates is a bit dicey - there just isn't the bandwidth. You might be able to get it working. However, especially in the 2.4Ghz band all you need is a bit of interference - such as another network, a cordless phone in that frequency or someone turning on the microwave - and you will get glitching and dropouts.

Are you sure there are no other options such as flat cable run under carpet etc?

Failing that, streaming to the second telly in SD instead of HD might be an option? The picture will obviously be lower quality, but the bandwidth needs are much lower and a wireless connection should consequently be more stable.

Well, as I said earlier, ours works perfectly and has done so without a glitch for more than two months. It's great.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

Thanks, but reading various comments and review it really does seem hit and miss. For me it has to work 100% all the time.

Hi Kiwitrc

I see from your Geekzone post that you got your Screencast working with a universal remote.  Can you please let me know what model of remote you used, and where you got the IR code?

If you used 'learning mode' to learn the signal, how did you get on with that?

I've got the same problem with my remote that most people seem to have had.  Basically, I wasn't getting an IR signal out of the remote (checked using my mobile phone camera), but after some experimenting / research on the interweb I fiddled with the battery connection (I basically just squeezed the unit quite hard over the area where the batter is, using some vicegrips, and that seemed to have bent the internal connector enough so that it now makes a constant connection with the battery), and got it so that it was sending out a visible signal.

Trouble is - the receiver still doesn't understand the signal most of the time.  I managed to get about two steps into the config process by pressing buttons on the remote  a _lot_ of times, but quickly got to the point where it just wouldn't get a signal no matter how many times I pressed the button.

I'm happy to buy a universal remote, but am not sure if this will solve the problem - if the signal the Screencast remote sends is too weak / faulty, won't the universal remote just repeat the problem?

Any feedback you can give me would be most welcome.

Thanks  ...  Wal

Wal, Logitech 785 but most likely any Logitech Harmony will work. You download the drivers from within the software provided by Logitech.

Thanks mate - that's brilliant.  Will invest in one now.

Also, for anybody that's interested, I came across a site which lists devices Logitech Harmonys support (even though their support forums say there is no such list).  And sure enough, it shows it's supported (although you have to look for it in 'Amplifiers -> Audio/Video Switch', which isn't that intuitive, but what the hey.

The list is here - http://myremotesetup.com/easyzapper/New/Main.asp?WebProcessAction=Start&ReturnUrl=%2FEasyZapper%2F.%2FNew%2FProcSpice%2Flanding.asp&ClassId=PrSpice.ProcSpice&RelativePath=ProcSpice%2F

There pretty much isn't anything (IR) that the Harmony won't support.

I got a 4 way optical splitter (Lindi I think) the other day, and was expecting to have to teach the harmony the codes to change inputs, but it was there and works perfectly.
