adamj: Well that is dumb. Means you have to have two decoders to get all the channel coming off 1 satellite. Also, if you had Sky Multiroom as well would the LNB's on the Sky satellites be able to feed 3+ decoders or would I have to have an array of dishes on my roof depending on how many decoders I have in the house?

If you wanted to get all the tv channels coming off the satellite you would need a bigger dish and several set top boxes. The Optus D1 satellite is used for SKY TV NZ, Freeview, SBS Australia, ABC Australiaand others ( http://www.lyngsat.com/optusd1.html ) some of these are free to air, some of them encrypted.

SKY TV and Freeview are competing against each other, sort of. It is quite feasible that TV1 and TV2 could be dropped from the SKY broadcast if the agreements between SKY and TVNZ expired... Same with TV3/C4... Once upon a time you weren't able to get any of these four channels through sky digital - you had to rely on VHF broadcasts.

SKY have not allowed the broadcast of their free-to-air channel "Prime" via the freeview boxes so why should Freeview allow SKY to rebroadcast any of their additional channels?

The ability of Sky STB's to see FreeViews channels is purley a contractual one, other than the small issue of mix polarities that is purely an engineering issue on Skys side that should be sorted in the next few weeks.

The software aspect that is mentioned in the media simply refers to the ability of sky boxs to view the Hpol transmissions that Sky will move to in the next few weeks, which will be the same polarity as the FreeView ones. Sky has to move to Hpol to exapand its own operations, let alone support FreeView services if they should wish.

Skys STBs used to watch the very same muxs as FreeVeiw use now for Sky viewers south of Taupo to recieve TV1/2 in years gone by, this existed up until very late last year. Sky only uplinked the Auckland feed of TV1/2 and relied on the TVNZ/Avalon FTA streams to support southern feeds. Now that FreeView exists and regional feeds have disapeard this situation can resume once Sky moves to Hpol.

There are minor technical issues such as the Freeview mux's carrying various Sky SI elements to allow Sky boxs to move from the FreeView muxs back to a Sky mux ( which was in place previoulsly as mentioned), but again this is all back to minor legal stuff which I am sure the various parties will sort through.
