A big thanks to everyone and especially Regs and Cryil7 for that explanation, you were spot on the money...

After playing further with the settings, I have got all channels fullscreen now.

Cheers

So from that I assume you have chopped the sides off everything by selecting 4:3PS. I personally think that is a backward way to deal with it. I prefer to select 4:3LB and just put up with this transition period when some material is still 4:3. I believe TVNZ will have very little 4:3 as they have cleared the cupboards out and restocked with 16:9 whereever possible, something TV3 didnt do.

old3eyes:
richms: What really annoys me is that the set top boxes have no provision for watching 4:3 channels on a 16:9 tv,

Why on earth would you want to watch a 4:3 channel in "Fatovision" for?? Thats the one thing that annoys me when you walk into the boxseller. All their HD TVs showing broadcast TV are set to "Fatovision" rather than 4:3 or they should show 16:9 content

no, but thats what you get unless you change the aspect on the tv from full to 4:3, my crt was smart enough to do that automatically on sky, but the panasonic lcd doesnt, so you have to change it yourself or watch them as fattyvision, if the skybox/freeviewbox would pillarbox it internally then this would not be an issue.

Yup, thats what I have done, selected 4:3PS, and I see your valid point.

Having tried the different types, 4:3LB, 4:3PS and 16:9...4:3PS was the only one that takes up the whole screen, but then it defys the point of widescreen, as your pointing out.

So the most ideal is to select 16:9, but one has to put up with this transition period with the screen reguarly chopping in and out of widescreen and letterbox pitcures, hence plenty of wasted screen space and mighty annoying.

I shall keep playing with it, flicking between the modes for now I think, until all settles down.

The correct setting for a 4:3 TV is 4:3LB, you just have to get past the failings of the transition and enjoy the benifits of widescreen.

My wife bought this painting the otherday, cost a bom, problem is the wall I want to place it on is a different shape to the painting, so I was trying to decide if I get someone to do a stretch job on it or just take to it with the scissors, what to do,.... oh what to do

Cheers

cyril7: Worldwide network type broadcasters (ie FTA commercial channels like TVNZ/CanWest) have universally moved from the old model to a fixed flag arrangment. In UK and Europe it was common practice to flag all material and leave the STB/Display to sort it out, but this is both combersome to handle for the broadcasters and can result in a lot of glitching on some STB's and displays.

Hence most Euro broadcasters are moving away from active flaging and nailing their services full time 16:9, it overcomes a major headache for them.

The likes of Skys movie channels that have rare changes of flags and would be very annoying to watch complete 4:3 movies in postage stamp then it makes sense, but for commercial type channels with continual switching the model CanWest and TVNZ have moved toward also makes sense. It will be interesting to see what Sky does with the likes of Sky1 and Prime as they move more of their servces to 16:9 as My Wellington is upgraded. I suspect those channels will move the way of TVNZ/CanWest.

CShwone, the Sky feeds of TV3 carry the same 16:9 feed as FreeView, hence the same. TV1/2 will follow suit on Sky as of midday sunday.

Cyril

Lets hope Sky subscribes to the same model.

A consistent approach, whether right or wrong will be preferable in my opinion. Aspect ratios can be hard to comprehend at the best of times as I have just learned after purchasing a new TV at the weekend and tryng to explain 4/3, 16/9, 14/9, zoom, wide zoom etc to the wife.
