tchart: We have a small Veon (19") in our bedroom mounted on the wall. It has a built in DVD player but we mostly use it with a Chromecast. Its never skipped a beat and the picture is rather good (1080p).

Hmmm I thought our 19's were only 720p but I might be thinking of the non-DVD model. I guess I'll have to read the stuff on the boxes more often. I was thinking about getting a 22 or 27.5 for my room which I think are full HD. I don't see many if any returns of Veon stuff.

Then I read Samsung or LG are releasing new OLED TV's. As in actual OLED screens not quasi OLED backlight with LCD. Their response time figures look really impressive, back in to the quick drawing of CRT speed.

I like the idea of the newer UHD screen sizes tpp, although it takes a little fun out of installing projectors and accessorising with anamorphic lens add-ons.

have a 39 inch fhd veon as a desktop monitor - works fine for the price

in-built sound is rubbish (but that's true for ALL tvs imo) - so i run a usb dac off my desktop and small t-amp to a pair of older mid size wharfedales which takes care of audio :)

have rarely used the tv tuner as live tv is rare thing in our household anyway

My family have several Veons (32 inch and up) so I've watched a lot of TV on them and the screens have been surprisingly good for the money. Sound not so good but I would use home theater systems with them anyway. Even so, I won't buy them as I'd rather pay 20-30% more and get TVs with better specifications.

Just think how many hours over its life will you be staring at it for - why would you elect to sit for thousands of hours looking at a sub standard picture when, for a few extra $, you can substantively improve the quality of your time? The extra little for a better quality screen averages out to next to nothing over your watching life.

Some years back, it was typical to pay $3-5,000+ for a quality telly. Now we balk at half that price as being too expensive when we can pick up a 50" Veon from the warehouse for $500. Life is too short to watch a crap image for hours ... and hours ... and hours ...

I have actually had to press my $278 Veon 32" set from the spare room into emergency service as my main TV, as my living room set has died.

Apart from the fact that 32 inches, which once qualified as a big TV, now seems tiny, It has been getting a bit of use so I can now comment more expansively on performance. For what it's worth, here's my take:

Picture 6.5/10 - not great, not unwatchably shabby either.
Connectivity - 8/10 - better than many higher end panels now. 3xHDMI, 2xComponent, 2xAV. Switches cleanly and quickly.
Sound - 3/10 - simply atrocious. Vastly worse than my now dead Samsung. If you are going to use one of these to watch movies, or much TV, for any period of time then a soundbar or some sort of sound system is a must.
Remote 7/10 - works well, but feels light and cheap, and the button layout isn't as intelligent as it could be. Works well across the room.

I'm stuck with using it as my main set for another week, before the new set I have ordered arrives. Then it gets booted back to infrequent use in the spare room.

3 Year warranty also makes these attractive as you could pay $700 for a Samsung and it could die in 13 months with no warranty and a battle to see if you can get anywhere with the CGA, whereas the Veon they'll repair or replace for 3 years.

You shouldn't have any battle with a quality brand that fails after just 13 months. Even 3 years should have easy CGA coverage if it is a good brand. I beleive consumer says that TVs should last 5 plus years as a reasonable life for a TV.

Agree. My Panasonic plasma died (thin lines of death running down the screen) after 2 1/2 years in January, so well out of warranty. I went straight to Panasonic as most times retailers have to get the ok from the supplier anyway. Dropped it into their service agent on my way to work and got a call a couple of hours later saying that Panasonic were going to replace it. Just a shame it died as it was a Neo plasma and my new tv is an LED.
