A pretty scathing forum post from 2011 gave them a big thumbs down - have they improved since then?

I've got a few of them (32") hanging on the wall and they are fine for a budget TV - the picture quality is acceptable and I have found that they have consistent backlighting as opposed to others like the Konka which have dark and light patches all over the panel.

3 Year warranty also makes these attractive as you could pay $700 for a Samsung and it could die in 13 months with no warranty and a battle to see if you can get anywhere with the CGA, whereas the Veon they'll repair or replace for 3 years.

The little 16-19" screens are pretty poor and don't know about the bigger panels.

Collectively purchased a 50" (55"?) for a prezzie for a family member.  I must say for a basic panel it's pretty good value for money.  3 year warranty out of the box is also hard to beat.   Easy to set up, passable picture (if your not too picky) sound is perfectly listenable, and easy to set up.  Been running well over 12 months on Sky and hasn't missed  a beat.

Yep, they are a major step up over the transonic brand the Warehouse dumped over quality issues.

They do have a good picture, the remotes are excellent (having a large rather ugly receiver on the bottom right of the tv body), the on screen menus look sharp, and they feature a glass stand, and they have a good warranty.

My Dad has a 42" and didn't like the image on the larger unit in store.  Not sure if that was a settings issue, but it did look rather washed out in comparison.

The only downside is the internal speakers are bad, like really bad.  That said, all TV's these days have a slim bezel around the outside and therefore dump where older flat panel TV's had the speakers.  Nowadays they'll try for the upsell of a sound bar to make you pay for what TV's used to have anyway.

So yeah, for the money I think they are excellent value.  If you were on a budget or wanted a 2nd TV then I'd say go for it.  They've also got a smart range out now I see, but no idea what that's like.  I don't like the idea of sinking smarts into a TV anyway though, so I'd use the likes of Chromecast for that anyway.  Given the option I'd still go for a name brand, but the cost factor comes in then.

Yeap allow a bit more money for a sound bar that supports coax input, as others have said the sound is not great.

They are great value, and backed by a solid warranty from The Warehouse. Picture-wise, there is better out there, but you will pay far more for it. The sound is very mediocre, though. If budget plays more than a minimal role in your decision, the Veon's are well worth considering. We replaced a slightly older Philips Ambilight series with a Veon, and the picture quality is just as good if not slightly better on the Veon (both are 1080p displays, the Veon is 50" the Philips 42").I have no used anything smaller than their 32", so not sure if their smaller panels are as reasonable as their larger ones.

We have a small Veon (19") in our bedroom mounted on the wall. It has a built in DVD player but we mostly use it with a Chromecast. Its never skipped a beat and the picture is rather good (1080p).

They are very finicky over what content they will play when a hard disk is connected to them... i've had some content play fine and others have no sounds at all

You shouldn't have any battle with a quality brand that fails after just 13 months. Even 3 years should have easy CGA coverage if it is a good brand. I beleive consumer says that TVs should last 5 plus years as a reasonable life for a TV.

I acquired one for occasional use in the spare room, and to move consoles etc out of the living room. Not great, but not too shabby either. Picture is OKI, sound is slightly on the tinny side. At the price point, for the right use, I think it was good value for money. I wouldn't buy one as a main living room set, but for a bedroom, kids room, or spare room I would buy again.

The newer ones have the branding printed on so you cant just peel it off like the older ones. Also they are edge lit, edge lighting is hard to do right and what I saw, they havent really done a great job. The older fatter models were all backlit and actually have really good uniformity over the screen. Im glad I picked up a couple of 39" ones on clearance after seeing what has replaced them.

Media player is a joke on them. Slow, cant do exfat drives, and very picky about what they will do. Keep your files small and use fat32 and it seems to play many things.

Slow to power on, slow to change input. Not tried the DVB tuner in them yet. USB port on them can power a chromecast and a HDMI over cat5 adapter at the same time just fine. Not sure what its max power output is.

The issue with the law is that the retailer is made responsible however they've only made $20 on the transaction often the government has made more from GST.

Retailers (quite rightly) are hardly going to make it easy to try and get a repair 2 years out of warranty - IMO if there is responsibility under the CGA then the manufacturer should be responsible - I bet a lot of retailers have to carry the can for CGA stuff when the supplier tells them they're not going to sort it out.

Buy once, buy right.
I couldn't recommend Veon / Konka / JVC at all.

Those are the breaks with being in retail in NZ, we pay way more than other countries for things. I dont care if its retailer, or manufacturers importers that are making the massive markups, when things cost as much more in NZ than they do in other countries they should have plenty of margins to cover these repairs.

Even if they were to only make $20 on a TV, thats $20 on each of 100s of TV's, so thousands of $'s to cover a few failures. Putting the problems right is a cost of doing business. If they are unable to sell things and have enough profit to do that and get a return on their investment then close the damn shop down.

Many of them are close to closing down...
Breaking even isn't a good reason to be in business, losing money is even worse.

I have a 16" Veon, purchased for under $100 as a runout. Picture is washy but does what I want and it is ideal as both a bedroom TV and as a spare monitor when doing the odd PC repair/setup.

As a TV it's internal DVB-T works fine on an eBay digital antenna the size of a mouse pad ($8.95US) receving through two walls. I am about 5km from Sugarloaf here in Chch.
