freitasm: It does support DVB-C. At least gives me the option to search for either aerial or cable when I select my HDhomerun.

Have you actually tried to scan?
From what I've read, it will list DVB-C tuners and related options... but scanning for digital channels fails with "0 channels found".
Why else would tuner vendors have to create virtual DVB-S or DVB-T tuners to wrap their DVB-C tuners?

WMC just works, I use to run it when I watched live TV. Have it as part of W8.1. But since moving to streaming a year or so a go I use Plex + Roku :-)

I though it would come to this eventually. I love WMC and use it heavily for Live TV and it is wife friendly. I use a Logitech remote and launch it by changing the .aac file extension to WMC default. I have been exploring Media Portal, especially as it may be easier to record to my NAS. I do not want to Hijack this forum but is it a good alternative to WMC?

Looked at Kodi this morning, no good, hassle to setup with plugins all over the show and whatever I did it decided to not close and wouldn't go away until I gave it the three finger salute.

Media Portal, wanted to install a server backend so left it at that, when I have time to figure out the server part I might look into it again.

Only two options I have looked at but my options are limited as I want to use Media Browser (emby) with which ever solution I end up on, so at the moment my options are limited.

Maybe the Silicondust media center development will prove useful.

I personally prefer a backend server, tv tuners/recordings all in one location and shared between many clients.

So I use kodi for live tv, currently with nextpvr backend (but that can easily change without changing the kodi front ends). I don't need tv aerials where all the tvs are, if I record a show on one tv, its available on all.

I agree its more setup, and kodi still needs work on the recording aspects. but the once its setup its a lot better IMO. and can use raspberrypis for clients. if i want to record stuff I generally schedule those on a computer. but i hardly ever watch or record live tv these days.

WMC7 did have a really great netflix addon.

It's not perfect, but it does an okay job. It's getting a huge amount of use here at the moment.

The mediaportal TV server can be on the same machine as the client, it works seamlessly and you can then connect further clients to it as well.

WMC will also have a server component in the background handling scheduling and database - you just cant split them out.

kodi has everything as plugins/addons so you dont need to wait 9months between releases for updates. they changed to this model years ago. The weather addons for example use to be built in, not a plugin, but the weather webservice they used stop being free and went away. People had to wait until the next xbmc release for this to be fixed.

If a PVR backend changes, and requires updates, or if they add new features, now you can get them instantly. it really is a better way to do things.

kodi is pretty simple to setup, my parents having been using it for years...

Not unexpected i guess, but with Xbox360's being so cheap the last couple of years WMC was the best whole home solution I've found. Live TV, PVR, photos, homes movies, music, it just worked.

What I am not clear about, is exactly what I can replace it with. Reading this forum and others there doesn't seem to be any obvious replacement.

All that I would need is a tool to do the recording. I can use other tools to create myself an EPG so I would just need some way of telling some sort of service to record what is on one of my tuners. I could then build myself a WPF or WinRt front-end that displayed what I had recorded, and displays the EPG to give me the flexibility to do what I need. Is there any such thing?
