I had something similar with my TV once ... fresh batteries in the remote sorted it, I assumed the TV was picking up something via IR but it was to weak or garbled.

Quinny: Own 4 VT models (VT10, VT30, VT50 and VT60) and no burn in on any but then most of my watching is via the media server functions, Sky or channel surfing. I just love these TVs to bits. Also had none of the issues others are hitting. I normally check every few months for updates via tv think did last lot as Netflix came out so could add app but have not bothered with Netflix in the end.

I can only notice the burn in on a solid monotone background, so very seldom see it... but I know it's there!

Interwebs tells me the latest firmware for the VT50 was September 2012 (ver 2.621), do you guys have a later one than this?

eXDee: This is why i was reluctant to get a smart TV, i like the idea of the display being dumb as possible and connecting smart devices to it. Unfortunately fighting the tide never works though.

This amazing TV though isn't as full on smart OS as the current generations though. Hope it gets fixed.

I don't use any of the smart features, but the TVs with the best display are also the "smartest". If I could have gotten the same TV without the smart features for less money I would have.

I have a P65VT50 and ran a break in colour slideshow downloaded onto a USB stick for 200 hours before viewing anything on the panel (there was a lot of info online recommending this) It has been a fantastic TV with no problems at all.

Yeah, I didn't do enough research. I thought that burn-in was only an issue for an image displayed constantly without a break, and since channel logos aren't displayed during ad breaks that it would not happen. Live and learn, as I say I only seldom notice it under specific conditions so it could be far worse.

Try running the pixel orbiter / sweeper thing in the menu. Run long enough, it will often rid a set of image retention. I did just this on a Samsung plasma in the office, with great results.

I have everything connected now and there has been no further crashes since the factory reset.

Thanks - but this is burn-in, not image retention (actually different things). I've done the sweeper, pixel flippers, slideshows etc, for days on end.

The Mrs watches a fair bit of TV2, so even if I'd run it in properly first it may well have been inevitable in the long run (at least that's what I tell myself!) - as those pixels are spending a lot of time lit more brightly than the others so will age faster. Doesn't appear to be getting worse at least.

The pixel orbiter just makes the edges of any image retention or burn-in a bit softer - worth having turned on, but doesn't truly prevent it.

after a couple of weeks of stability the crashing has resumed. I am starting to wonder if it is being caused by the VF T-Box.

To be fair, I've seen two set top boxes crash TV's and amps...
TiVo and Vodafone TV...

I messaged Panasonic this morning and they rang me within the hour, impressive. I had a good talk with them and they believe the problem lays with the Vodafone TV (T-Box) and issues with CEC compatibility. They advised me to disconnect all peripherals, turn off the Viera Link settings reboot and reattached the peripherals. I have done this so will be testing
over the next week or so. Fingers crossed as I really do not want to have to replace this TV until I really have too it has an awesome picture.
