nuclearchicken: The SCART cable sounds like the biz . Glad you had no troubles getting it going

Looks like I'll have to get one as well

I added it to my blog as well: http://www.geekzone.co.nz/BarTender/4351

Yay for Component on TCL Cable!!... now all I need is a big widescreen Plasma Component TV for home.  Staying up in Waikanae at the mo at the batch and watching everything over the satellite instead of TCL cable and wanted to show the improved Picture Quality to the Mother in Law and Wife on a new TV the MIL baught for out there last night...... But they couldn't see any difference :(... Heathens, what about the richness of colour and improved image clarity. <aargh!>

That's a good price for the SCART / composite lead . Went to our local Harvey Norman to check out prices ( lead made by Monster $199 ):
looks like Jaycar is the place to go

I get a lot of cables from Selbys in Aus on Ebay, even with shipping they still work out cheaper than the Jaycar ones, and I dont need to travel to Wellington to pick them up, or maybe Bartender can deliver?

Here is a link.

That would be in the same boat as card sharing for personal use - violating the contract you have with sky. There are no peneltys in the contract for doing so, so the worst you would get if they found out was your sky canceled unless they could prove real losses.

i dont think it would be in the same boat as card sharing.. what i am talking about is taking the card out of my sky decoder, putting the sky decoder into a box and storing it in closet or something (no in use at all). and then putting the card into the dreambox 500s..

so there would be no sharing of the card.. just replacing the decoder.

Your contract with them says that you will only use authorized equipment to receive the service, so you are asking how to break their T&C, in addition you are asking how to use the card in a device that can circumvent their copyprotection allowing you to dump the mpeg data to disk which may be against the flags of the broadcast, like payperviews etc which are tagged that they cant be recorded.

It can be done, I have seen it done, and there are people on the forums that have done it, but it is still violating your contract, and it may be illegal, but I am not sure on the second one. The first is a non issue since nothing will come of it, but the second... well how is it any different then snatching an infringing copy off bittorrent or renting a movie and ripping it?

People do care about T&Cs because most of the times companies don't need much to simply cancel a service.

I don't know if richms has shares on Sky or not - but it shouldn't matter to me or you.

By the way, this is the second time I see a post on these lines. Breach of T&Cs is not accepted at Geekzone, nor sharing information on how to do it
