An Arduino with temp sensor and relay, use the AVR 12v triggers to switch the project on/off

Simple, set switch on temp and switch off temp and (advanced) if you got clever you could use variable speed to speed up the fans for heavy work and slow them down under low work.

If you google the subject I find umpteen fan control projects that give a start point.

The difference between this stuff and buy off the shelf is fun factor.

Here is what looks like a good example of a temperature controller project.

Hmmmm

So i placed a usb driven pc fan on top of the sky box sucking hot air out and placed a second alongside it pushing cold sir under it. This worked a treat.

im trying to look at options for a thermostatic switch but to be honest thats just a fun factor project.

The USB driven fan is connected to the sky box USB port so its self driving and seems to be doing just fine.

I even switched off the side fan and the top fan did just as well at sucking through.

I did some temperature monitoring in the space where the sky box sits and top temp with everything running full bore in the cupboard was about 38° a temp probe on the sky box recorded 45°..

The sky unit was running the hottest - even hotter than the AVR (marantz) but with the fan on top it cruised along at 24°... i call that a success

Amazing what you can do when you recycle some old PC stuff and a USB cable you never use anymore. Oh and i attached a couple of little sticky rubber stoppers to the fan before sitting it flat on the sky box.

I remember my mate when he was flatting had hit big Onkyo amp cranking with a big set of Cerwin Vega speaker. His amp got so hot it kept turning off so we stuck an electric car fan on top of it connected to a 12v supply and that solved the heat issue.

That might not be quiet enough if you are wanting to use your system at a lower volume though wink

If the cupboard has a ceiling in it you could put a vent in the floor with the fans extracting the heat into the ceiling space whilst cool air is bought up through the floor

I just use a laptop cooling pad that has two fans powered by usb. Very quiet and cheap. I do have a vent in the ceiling too.
