JimmyC:

Yep, aka happy wife, unhappy wife. Pick one :-)

To be fair, I picked good sound. Wife is very understanding, cooks well, and cleans too (when I'm revolting). I still can't stand the sight of the wires and the space it sucks up behind/around the floor standing speakers.

The best bet is build/put some shelving at strategic places and hide a bookshelf in there.

You know, the most important thing is that the rears are behind and lateral to you in my experience. Don't worry too much about anything else if they cannot be helped. And 5.1 is fine. Really. As long as you have 6 very good quality speakers.

And the most important of them all ... the SUB [And ideally your fronts go lower than 28 Hz because TBH your sub will be pretty useless in a room with open wall (yours is a "long room", and doors, glass windows, high ceiling etc) - but I will be crucified by purists who say bass is sent to the sub but hey - people use quad subs you know, but yes they do use software to equalize them].

Usually when effects are sent zooming around the room the LFE is the strongest. That is what you feel that generates the atmosphere. And I use SPL meters, crawled around the room for bass, until recently was shopping for 5 identical floor standing speakers and 4 identical subs.
